Default Re: V is a sign of survival!

Yo C,

Hand signs have become such a fad these days. No longer do women take leave air kissing, they just put a thumb to the ear and the small finger to the mouth- 'call me' or 'I'll call you'. My 15 year old nephew gives me a high five or worse a gang handshake (me wonders , what gangs operate in TVM)??!! And, not to be outdone in this modern digital technology, I flash a 'L' at Ramji from the balcony when he drives off to work.

So, I am okay with your nephew's 'V'.

Actually, dig his implication that the 'V' is a sign of survival and not necessarily victory. (How on earth can we contort a 'S' with our digits? Not all our fingers are perhensile). I am quite sure Drawin wrote of 'survival of the fittest' and not 'victory of the fittest'. And when mere survival is tantamount to victory (as life in these times teach us), then victory is survival. If to survive in the same place, one has to run faster and faster, then what on earth does one do to win? Tumble down the mole hill? (Apologies to lewis Carroll).

Coming back to the 'V', I think it has a pride of place in the alphabets of the world. The DaVinci code taught me that 'V' is the sign of the feminine. In Holland, women's toilets have 'V' on them, since the word for woman there is 'vrouw'.

And did you know, C, that when a woman is named starting with a V, she is truly precious??!!! She manages to survive all odds, maybe never a winner ,but hey she stays on, survives on-------

regards
V

Dear Sri,
V may mean different things to different people.
But for me, the letter stands for only one person !
Yes, my very survival depends on V.
Love,
Chithra.

Dear Vidya
A very thought provoking supplement to my basics indeed!
That brief resume of the modern forms of greeting was quite educative! For the first time, I have been made to feel much behind my times! Of course there are gangs in TVM but not quite operative!
That one has to run faster and faster to survive in the same place is very well said. Survival today has become a lot more difficult than when dinosaurs were freely roaming the earth!
I'll steer clear off rooms with a V sign on them when I visit Holland, if at all! Is it possible that V has become the sign of the feminine because of the habit of women throwing up their arms in exasperation when things go against their plans?
Who wouldn't agree with that last statement of yours?
Sri

Dear C,

Last things first! Thank you for agreeing with my last statement in my first post--

No, you dont have to steer clear of rest rooms marked with V in Holland. Dutch women are pretty practical and down to earth, and have no objection to pleasant looking, avuncular Indian gentlemen knocking on doors marked 'V'. Honestly, loos tend to be unisex in some parts of Holland.

I am thinking over why the V has become a sign of the feminine--- and I dont like your interpretation very much. Years back, when I was into gender studies, I stumbled across a Latvian myth of how the V became a symbol of the feminine. If I put it here, Malathy will have me out of IL in ten seconds. But then, you go ahead and let your imagination run wild----No infractions for free thinking.

If I tell you that in one civilization, the V was considered feminine cos it was the sign of the Bird Goddess, will you call us women 'bird brained?'

V
