Hi Simran, thanks for this wonderful thread. Chandigarh gardens ki thought se dil baag-baag ho jaati hai.

My personal favorite is Rock Garden. Created by Nek Chand Saini, a resident of the city in 1958, Rock Garden is Chandigarh's premier attraction and a popular spot for tourists. The urban waste material like bottles, tin cans, broken plugs, plates, saucers was turned into creative patterns and textures, mute rocks turned into art objects.

A visit to the Rock Garden is a must for all the tourists travelling to Chandigarh. The first phase of the rock Garden is a small canyon. The canyon opens into a series of chambers, each one filled with scores of human and animal forms in concrete and broken ceramic or glass.

What do you like best about Rock Garden, Chandigarh?. I love this part of the Rock Garden; and you?

Rock Garden - What a beautiful concept!. Thanks for sharing information with us on this beautiful garden. Is every thing in this garden made of scrap? Are further additions being made to the garden since Nek Chand Sainiji created it in 1958?

Awaiting interesting facts.....

Arrow Chandigarh Gardens - Rock Garden

Yes, the Rock Garden in Chandigarh is mainly assembled from scraps and non-biodegradable wastes.

The site where Rock Garden stands today was also used as a dumping ground for urban and industrial waste, Nek Chand picked up pieces of foundry lime-kiln and metal workshop wastes and also shaped them with his creative genius, resembling human, animal or abstract forms. These pieces have been creatively displayed as sculptures in the garden.

Also, on display are shapes sculptured by using a variety of discarded materials such as frames, mudguards, forks, handle bars, metal wires, play marbles, crowns of soft drink bottles, porcelain, auto parts, broken bangles, pieces of slate, burnt bricks and even human hair recovered from barbers' shop.

Nek Chand salvaged a variety of debris from demolished structures, waste from lime kilns, discarded street lights, electrical fittings, broken sanitary ware, crockery etc. thus demonstrating how urban and industrial waste can be fruitfully recycled and used in creative pursuit.

What a beauty! Rock Garden really rocks.
My Salute to Nek Chandji for such an innovative art. Hope we see more of Nek Chand's in our country. Please tell us more about it. I'd surely love to see and hear more and more of it.

Thanks Again.

Unhappy Re: Chandigarh Gardens

This is undoubtedly one of the best places to visit in Chandigarh with your families. But, I fear, if we Chandigarhites will still be able to enjoy the serenity and the liveliness of the Rock Garden as a huge multilevel parking is coming up there. I heard the entire area has almost been dug up and it might even take away a part of the Rock Garden wall.....

Anyone knows about it?
