I have a suggestion for you.

While inserting the pictures, ensure that one picture occupies one page. This will make sure that the pics wont be very small.
If u put one pic in a pg, best orientation would b 'Landscape'
but if u put 2 pics in a pg, best orientation would be 'Portrait'.
You can try this out for few pics and then work out the best combination for the novel. Coz, it also depends on the pg size and font size of the novel book.

Also, there is another way to print the pics without inserting into word document. (Am telling the steps with Win XP. In Vista also, it should be very similar)
1. Go to the folder containing all the pics. Select all. Right click and select 'Print'. (Here you have to make sure that your picture file names are in sequence order as in pg no of the novel.And right click on the file name of first pg of novel.)
2. You will get 'Photo Printing Wizard'. Click Next (See Pic)
3. In Photo Selection, 'Select All' and then click Next (See Pic)
4. In Printing options, select printer as 'Win2Pdf'.
5. Click 'Printing preferences' in same box, and select orientation as 'Landscape'. Click Ok. Now Click Next. (See Pic)
6. In Layout selection, select the best suitable layout for the pics. Mostly full page prints will go best with 'Landscape' orientation. This will 1 pic in a pg. Click Next. Print preview will tell you hw a pg in pdf will look like.
7. Now select a location for saving and give a file name.

Note: Pics in next post...
Thats it... You will get a pdf....

I know the steps are way many in number. But if you do it once, you ll find it really easy to do it frm next time.
