With women's day around the corner, a friend and I were talking about books that have a woman as a main character. I got reminded of few famous women throughout literature like Elizabeth Bennet, Jane Eyre, Scarlet O Hara and more recently Bridget Jones, Rebecca of shopaholic series, and some protagonists of sidney sheldon books.

Let's share our favorite female characters (and if possible, share why).

    Here I go:

Elizabeth Bennet of Pride and Prejudice - when I think of characters from classics, she is the first person that comes to my mind.
Hermione Granger - I love everything about her.
Princess Mia of princess diaries - She reminds me of life as a teenager and how wrapped we were in our silly issues and how good that life was even if it didn't seem so at that time.

Will add if I think of more later.

@priyasrini @shanvy @madhuprabha @helpmeangel looking forward to hear your favorites.

    Hey chillbreeze..

Nice thread indeed! Here is what comes to my mind now!

    1. Elizabeth Bennet -Pride and Prejudice (You have said it right - "when I think of characters from classics, she is the first person that comes to my mind" - True!!)
    2. Dominique - In The Fountainhead. Quite controversial characterization. Yet a powerful one.
3 Kundavai - Ponniyin Selvan (tamil). Not only in the fiction, but also in history Kundavai, sister of Raja Raja Chola I, is a very remarkable woman.
    4. Mariam - A thousand splendid Suns. Mariam personifies any Afghan women who endures life under Taliban with a Strength. A character which lives in the heart long after finishing the book.
    5. Tracy Whitney (If tomorrow comes) and Jennifer Parker (Rage of the Angels) are two courageous Shidney Sheldon's women I liked.
    6. Kate Blackwell (Master of the Game) by Sheldon again. I despised her while I read the book, but couldn't stop myself from admiring her strength and determination to get what she wanted. Truly the master of the game!

Will add If I missed anything :)

My favorite courageous ladies are as follows:

    1. Kira Argounova from We the living (Love her commitment to be independent)
    2. Dominique from Fountainhead (Love her rebellious nature)
    3. Dagny Taggart from Atlas Shrugged (Love love love Dagny for being the catalyst to change the world)
    4. Mary Boleyn from The Other Boleyn Girl (This quiet sister of Anne, just steals the show)
    5. Anna Karenina from the book of same name (I love her fierce independent nature)
    6. Catherine from Wuthering Heights (I love her fierce stubborn ways)
    7. Drapaudi from Palace of Illusions (What is not there to love about her?)
    8. Scarlett O'Hara from Gone with the wind (Love how she changes over time when the war struck)

    Nice thread!

Though I like many female leads that I have read, one character affected me much more than the rest.

'Jill Castle' from Sidney Shedon's 'A Stranger in the mirror' is one of my most fav female lead. She is a neg character, but I donno why, the character affected me so badly when I read it, especially the climax. I even thought of naming my kid 'Jill' :-D

@Rajeni I like most of the characters you mentioned. I haven't read ponniyin selvan or a thousand spendid suns but have heard a lot about them. I don't know how I missed Kate Blackwell and Catherine from Wuthering Heights. I love Kate, she was truly the "master of the game".

@Helpmeangel thanks for sharing your favorites. Though I am not a big fan of Gone with the wind, I like Scarlet O Hara. Like most of the characters you have mentioned except the couple of ones I haven't read.

@Shanvy @Nemesis @Deepthiraj I am going to look up the books and characters you mentioned. That's why I love this forum as I get to know lot of new things.

@Laks09 and @jingi92 I am eager to know about your favorites too.
