read once a view of a member here in some thread regarding Fairy tales...i dont remember her name...
She was saying that she doesn't like to tell fairy tales to her kids esp girls ..becos the girl will grow up thinking themselves as delicate dolls ...and waiting for a prince charming to come and save her from all her troubles...
    How true...it is ...!

Other day my uncle was saying that his daughter had started reading fairy tale Cinderella recently ...and when her father scolded her for being disobedient ..she started saying that ...her parents are ill treating her like Cinderella's mother :-( ...Poor father just wanted the kid to have her food
we were shocked ....what an impact these tales has on kids of these generation..

So I guess u ve to be very careful what we teach kids ....
that too we should teach a girl to be bold in this life ....
They should know that No Prince charming will ever come to save them from any of their troubles ...

Sorry for disturbing your thread ...but i just want the next generations to be bold and not to make the same mistakes that we did in our life :)

    hi rogo,

    you are welcome....
You are absolutely true..these fairy tales leave an impact on the kids...

It is not said simply that children are like clay you can shape them the way you want (well atleast when they are growing...) until my kids understood the difference between the fairy and actual....i used to follow what they read.....and tell them.....

And i also balance the fairy with bitter truths..the recent addition to my kids book is "HOPE IS LIFE" written by one S.Shanmugam...it describes the challenges overcome by the physically handicapped....when i first bought the book..my husband was telling me i am trying to be harsh by giving this book to my kids.....
My view is that the people described in these stories have overcome all difficulties...so this is to always tell my children that we have been given everything..so we should be able to do more than these people..and not grumble all the time......

You had rightly said that girls shuld be bold and shuld know how to handle problems. But u can't say that these stories have total ill-effects.when i read this story to my brother & sisters and even to children,i had always emphasised on this thing that Cindrella was nice to everyone even to her cruel mother that's why god had helped her and there is no chapter in cindrella in which Prince saved her life except at the end.she was brave b'coz she faced every problem without anybody's assistance.Secondly,u jst can't stop the literature as it has both effects it depend on us(parents) how we let ur children handle it as portraying cindrella as a pathetic character or as a brave girl.

    Dear Shanvy,

Thanks for showing me this thread for my question I had posted about book suggestions for my 12 yr old boy. Most of the books here, he has read. Unfortunately we don't get many books written by Indian authors. Still this is a good list, will see if he has missed any.

Also good books for younger kids are 'Charlottes web' and 'Wizard of Oz'.

    Regards
