Trick Or Treat: Candy Overload Time
Posted 25th October 2007 at 11:10 AM by Vandhana
Folks, it’s that time of the year again. Halloween
is just around the corner and I just dread this time of the year. Mainly for all the candy that is brought home beginning now till Easter gets over!! Gosh the numbers of fights with the kids to keep them from eating all the candy in one go. It’s like Chocolates are the staple diet for the next 5 months.
Like Birthday party and pizza, Halloween and Chocolates go hand in hand. Of course this is just the beginning. Just when the stash of Halloween candy at home is about to finish, along comes Christmas and invariably, we get another basket full of candy. Ok that’s bearable, but then within 2 months it’s Valentine’s Day (yes all kids get chocolate hearts from the classmates!! and then Easter (now its chocolate eggs).
Hubby dear always says that there is a MOU between the Chocolate makers and the dentists. See, Candy sales and Cavities, there is a definite relationship there. Go into any store now, its Candy, candy everywhere….. Aisles filled with about so many varieties from floor to ceiling, just looking at them, makes me Diabetic!
So these past couple of years, I have vowed not to hand out chocolates to the Trick or treaters who come home. Instead I give them something else which may not be healthy, but at least my little bit to contribute towards decreasing the parent’s dental bill. I have a deal with my kids too. They do the Halloween dress up thing in School. No trick or treating in the neighborhood. Instead, we all go to dinner of their choice (where else but you guessed it Pizza!).
That has worked out well. No whining, no tantrums, no fights, and no playing hide and seek with the chocolates at home.
So ladies, if you would like some suggestions on what to give as treats other than chocolates, here is a list. I usually go to Costco (Sams Club) to buy in wholesale, works out more economical.
1. Juice Boxes
2. Variety pack of the small bagged cookies (I think you get around 30 bags in a box)
3. Variety pack of the Chips and similar snacks (Costco has huge boxes I thinks 40 bags in a box)
4. Nutrigrain bars
5. Rice Krispie treats.
6. Fruits (mostly apples)
7. Small boxes of raisins
Usually I keep an assortment of the above, and yes if I have leftovers, then I happily give it to my kids.

| | Dearest vandhana as much as i enjoy "talking" to you all the healthy treats will not work for me. my neighborhood only needs candy and that the good kind. I have already stocked up my supplies from Sams. Thank god that son and dh do not eat that much candy and son only has kitkat (really in moderation) so I am saved. Also i have found a source to distribute all the candy that come in the nest day itself. So this works for me. I do envy you your nice list!!!!!!!! |

| | Oh yes Chitra, I know. I lucked out in that sense with my neighbourhood. My older one is like your DS too. he likes the gourmet exotic ones like belgian truffles and the like. That will be the day when they start handing out these stuff. But the younger one, ( 4) , he is altogether another story!! Thanks for liking the list. I find kids equally happy when you give them dorittos or cheetos and the like. |

| | Vandhana, nice to read about halloween and the give-aways and candies and cavities and ..... wow, you surely are one who knows how to eat healthy and also one who spreads that idea around. your list seems impressive. Here, as you know, we don't get taht great candies OR varieties but we do get a share whenever we have friends over. It's me whose chasing chocos and candies. D isn't taht crazy. I'm worse than your younger boy - I'd happily sit and feed on all those goodies ( did you say 5 long months, wow, really great) . as for give-aways we don't need a reason to share - we are all the time giving and taking things from neighbours, whether it's a new recipe or thigns from travel or even fruits/veg frm garden , etc etc Yes, the give-aways during festivals is becoming a more serious affair and I do see a lot of them giving special small little gifts during festivals. I do collect unique stuff while travelling just for give-aways. I'm looking forward to christmas. have someone coming fm london and I just can't wait for all teh goodies!!!!!!!!! anyway, Happy Halloween!!!!!!!!!!! |

| | Dear Vandhana, Halloween is one of my favourites. I have been helping other moms in the office and in our residential block to do the Halloween party for years now. Mostly, I dress as the witch and stir a smoky pot and Ramji never fails to pull my leg saying that it is an appropiate costume. I have also been handing out 'nature's choclates'- raisins in different forms along with stuffed apples. Sadly, the trick or treat kids come to my house last, since the raisins are not very appealing. I am really considering what I can do to lure the monsters back???? |

| | Meena, Christmas is a such a merry time, regardless of whether we observe it spiritually or not! The birth of goodness transcends religions. If you have friends coming from UK, ask them to get Christmas pudding boxes. THey come in different flavours like 'traditional', 'sticky toffee'. You can just heat the box in the microwave and serve it with warm custard, or just eat plain. I keep a stock of these for the year. They have long expiry dates. Ho!Ho!Ho! |

| | Hi V, That was funny, I share your pain buddy, since I am in a similar situation here!!. See halloween happens to be my anniversary, and Hubby says now truly its the scariest day of his life and does not want to be reminded!! Hey i love raisins in all its forms.Specially the dark chocolate covered ones. And christmas pudding ......... It gets really very few takers here. But i love it. Yes indeed, V, I am just waiting for the Holiday Season to begin. As they say in the song" Its the most wonderful time of the year". |

| | Nice list, Vandhana! Here in my place i need not worry about giving candies to the kids, because, no kids come this way to have 'trick or treat' because it a like a ' Halloween day' everyday with no street lights except only one in our side of houses! So my kids go to with their friends to some other places and get 2 'pillow cover' full of candies! sriniketan |

| | Dear Vidya & Vandhana, thanks for your suggestion - I've already asked for christmas pudding. I love this part of the year for there's festivity all around and the cool climate. I studied in a convent and we used to look fwd to christmas celebrations - used to be so much fun and merry making. just the thought of it brings in joy and happiness. anyway, thank you girls for helping me get some christmas puddings, this year.... Happy Halloween and Merry Christmas!!!!!!!!!!! Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

| | Hai Vandhana, Those are lovely replaceable for chocolates to the littles ones coming by asking 'trick or treat'. I shall remember to buy those on your list for next Halloween. This Halloween I got busy at work and did not buy the usual bag of candies. Instead handed out few big brand chocolates, but you know these neighborhood kids did not get attracted for the brands. All they wanted was handful of candies to pick and fill their bags. Crazy kids, isn't it??? Happy anniversary, Vandhana. |

| | Hi Rathi, Thanks for the wishes. Crazy kids isn't it. All the kids who came to my place this year asked me " aunty no dorittos this year"? They were a little disappoineted too. But happy with the nutrigrain bars and 100cal paks that i handed out. |

| | I am very proud of myself after the 'trick or treat' monsters visited me last evening. I put up a pumpkin lantern outside my house to indicate that they can ring my bell. Since Ramji (my good food monster) is away, I bought loads of sugary stuff loaded with sugar, artificial colours, flavours and preserves. Then I went in search of the monsters to actually invite them to ring my bell. As I expected, they were not happy to see me. The pirate whispered meanly to the mummy, 'last year this aunty gave us raisins and stuffed apples'. I assured them that this year would be different. The monsters arrived rather uncertainly. I loaded their pillowcases with all my sugary evils. They were overjoyed and peace was restored. I had a bowl of Sunmaid raisin packets which I did offer round, no takers. No probs, I told myself. It was my best Halloween ever. |
