Nostalgia

Posted 15th November 2007 at 01:25 PM by SupriyaDinesh
From birth till the end we breath. We inhale air every moment.Along with it in goes lots of smells.Out of all that goes in I have some smells that brings back memories on any day.
On a rainy day,the fresh smell of damp soil takes me to my school days which was situated amidst nature.I can visualize my self as a school girl sitting in my class and seeing the puddles and rain drops, waiting for the peon to ring the bell.
Whenever I smell the fragrance of washed clothes,I can see my mom drying clothes in our verandah in my home town.I smile to myself very often coz there is laundry room which smells of detergent and washing liquids.
The smell of freshly baked bread triggers my appetite no matter how full Im.
We had a pet dog, whose fur used to smell like the aroma of basmati rice(wonder how). When ever i cook basmati rice,my heart aches to see and smell my pet dog who is no more.
My toddler.no matter how dirty he is,always smells heavenly and it will remain in my nostril no matter how old he grows.
Dear ILites share u r nostalgia on smell.

With Regards,
Supriya

I can probably add agarbathi smell reminds me of our home puja and even when I enter my puja room any lingering smell thoughts of puja and of God. Smell of cooking food again reminds me of home In this case just our home. Maybe these are going to be my sons nostalgia sometime. Hi Supriya,

Very nice blog. Brings back some super fragrant memories. I too love the smell of the damp soil when it rains, along with the "bhutta" ( corn ) roasting in the coal pots. I love the smell of coal burning on a cold winter night, fresh baked goods ( yummy). yes a baby's smell is always too good. Kalpuram smell in the temples ....

Hi Supriya,
Good writing!
All the smells you had mentioned is on my list too! But regarding the pet, he also had a different smell which identified him as such!
Kalpooram and agarbathi's brings out our temples!
Regarding food, appalam, cardamom brings out the festive memories and also the 'deepavali legiyam' our memories of our days of celebration of Deepavali in India.
I had to mention this: our American friend liked the 'salt seedai' i made and gave it to her during Krishna Jayanthi. She asked me one day that if I was making the same because she 'smelled' it that day.

That was a very nice blog!
I remember a collection of poems by Jill Chan. There is a poem titled 'The smell of Oranges'.
I am sure you will all like it..
Here is the poem!

My mother would ask
if I wanted them cut or peeled.
I'd answer that I wanted them peeled
if only to see her fingers hold them
like clay to be molded.
After peeling their husk,
she would put her thumbs in the centre
and break each into halves;
Later separate the slices, one by one.<?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O />

I marvel at the flexible skins
pulling away,
not ever breaking at the pressure
.

Beautiful blog! This is the word that comes to my mind when i walk home from the station-The smell of freshly boiled tea reminds me of the Chai-wala in Mumbai. The sound of Desi students on the train reminds me of Mumbai local. In fact on days I am depressed, I shut my eyes & pretend I am in an Andheri local..But the station announcement jolts me back to the present.

On rainy mornings, the smell of freshly baked bread reminds me of the local Pao-wala.

And of course every city has it's own gossip corner & my suburb has it too.The chatter of the old men reminds me of the corners the senior citizens have in India & my eyes go moist when I think of my darling parents....

Hi supriya,

I am one of those blessed/cursed ???...with a fine tuned (read it extra refined sense) of smell....though i love all the smells mentioned by you...there are smells that just catch me unexpected..the smell of sandal...the smell of vibuthi...the smell of maghizampoo.the smells of +ve auras.....and the smell of -ve auras...also...(don't want to elaborate)

when i say there is a smell, my family and neighbours start to come to attention, because they will get that smell the next day..so they give utmost importance to my nose...recent episode, felt there was a wire melting...called the eb...they told yes there is a problem in the wiring..so thanks to my senses....???

(I get chidded that i might have been you know what...in my previous birth....)

Dear Supriya ma'am, a wonderful write up and in a nutshell, nostalgia of smell is in itself longing for the smell which we had experienced earlier.

The list goes on as all have aptly put it!

The fresh smell of the pages of books in a library; the dragging smell of petrol, varnishes and paints; the fragrance of my lovely "hobby" (my cat's name) by which she always used to mesmerize me leaving me spell-bound; the rejuvenating smell that is released by the bacteria in soil before rain pours down; the smell of churning butter from curd; the extracting smell of chlorinated water in swimming pools; the natural serene when lined with the mountain peaks and dew filled has got its own unique smell; so on and so forth goes my nostalgic list that is treasured when experienced each time whole heartedly.

Thank you for bring back fresh memories.

Regards
