Cookery shows...

Cookery shows...

Please! I HAVE to write about this.. Dont stop me..
The smalll amount of television i see is when i am at home in chennai... Most of the stuff nowadays in TV makes me look at it from a hilarious angle, as i dont understand as to how artifical things can get....

Well, talking about cookery shows... One day, I was flipping channels, not able to stay in one for more than a minute which I have already blogged about here, when my mom wanted to watch a particular cookery show...
These shows are pretty funny...

This is the place where you will get to see 'hand care' at its best!! ... be it well manicured, highly nail-polished hands or a whole bunch of designer hand ornaments.. its all there for the viewers... They know that their hands are going to be 'the focus of attention' throughout the show ......but i still wonder as to who would like to knead a sticky dough with 4 finger rings and 2 coats of nail polish on.... ;)

In these shows, you can clearly observe that the statement "Idhu panradhukku romba easy and odambukku nalladhu kooda..." ( Its easy to make and very healthy too...) will be repeated atleast a hundred times in the course of the show...
Even if they fry it in deep oil or add a liberal layer of cheese on top of what they are making, they will still pinpoint the 20mg of DAL which happens to be present in the content, and say that it has a LOT of protein in it... or the stem of the vegetable which they have added will provide an lifelong supply of Vitamins .. or the milk which they have mixed will keep your bones strong even after you die...!!! :D well.. exaggerating...

One more thing which has to seriously BANNED from being said on these shows is "Kozhandhainga school lendhu vandha virumbi saaptuduvaanga... avangalukku romba pidikkum" ( When children return from school, they will really like to eat this stuff) For GOD's sake... its not only children who have to eat, in this world... even grown ups DO EAT..!!
Probably I might think differently when I have children, but I cannot accept that now! :D

They keep repeating that children will love it, and mention that they are adding every ingredient keeping in mind what children like...
And i really wonder if these people make this for their children when the kids get back home...

Last but definetely not the least, the 'garnishing/decoration' which they do, after they finishing cooking... Half a kilogram of whatever they make will be accompanied by another half a kilo or corriander, cashew, sliced cucumber, carrot, tomato and all such stuff on top of it... and at the end of it, you see a colourful end product, when it is focussed, and by the end of it, you end up forgetting what she had actually cooked... as it will be hidden, under the covers..err.. colours... And i bet all those 'extra' stuff will be treated as untochables after the show...

Theres one incorrigible show on one of our channels, wherein a team from the company which has sponsored the show comes on air, and they are served all the stuff which has been prepared and they taste it then and there.. The cameraman simply refuses to take them out of focus till they FINISH whatever is there in their plate/cup... !!
THE LIMIT I TELL YOU!! :)
Even as i am typing this i am ROTFL.... and hoping that situations would change, but still wonder as to how people put up with such consistent crap! :)

Well.. feel free to comment...i hope you will empathize.. :)

Sudha naanum..

ungal katchi thaan!

Your write up was hilarious. It is true too.I happened to see a pair of hands with gorgeous mehendi designs on one of the shows long back. She was demonstrating a chat item preparation.

Cookery shows have become very common these days and with mushrooming new channels it is the rule of the day to air such shows.Your observation on the dialogues is perfect..

I have stopped watching these shows now.Why does the media target women with cookery shows only? It's beyond my understanding.

I love watching them. Not only the well-maintained hands, but also the well-chosen match-match crockery set, everything has a bowl even if it is one curry leave.. Wonder who washes the dishes after the show is done ;) And it looks like a perfect way to cook, since everything is right before you, neatly cut, arranged and organized.. Not to forget the more common "Nannnnnnnaaaaaaaaa" usage that I really find too cute to resist admiration. This was apprently noticed by writer Sujatha too.. With his typical sense of humor, he says he wonders how many "n"'s he should put for that word to depict the impact.. Samples - "Idhai nannnnnnnnaaaa uruttanum.. " , "nannaaaaaaa kalakkittu" et al.

Sudha,
LOL as I read the post.

I have been following recipes from internet.
Youtube has multiple such videos. And I should say, some of them are really good. Pronunciation laam marandudanum (U shud forget pronunciations) ...

I wish the shows on tv were made for normal Indian wife/mother who wants to make a good dish for everyone home.

Waiting for more hilarious posts from you. I never miss them you see.

Ria,
Sanjeev kapoor's are so popular. He is a seasoned chef. Two things I am not comfortable in his shows are
1) Not all ingredients are available at home all the time. His shows sometimes are for expert cooks, or passionate cooks.
2) Appliances used. We dont get them so easily.

Dear Sudha,
Simply hilarious! Had a good laugh. I am like Ria, haven't seen cookery shows other than S. Kapoor's. Even in SK's cookery show, the kitchen counter is so sparkling clean and decorated. I mean flower arrangements, candles lit etc! I would love that but I can't see that happening while the kitchen is in use. I am a neat freak so I immediately clean up after I am done cooking.
My son once commented about SK's kitchen, "Mommy, look how clean and beautiful he keeps his kitchen. How come you have so many things around when you cook?" Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!

I have always been teased by DH, when I watch cookery shows, especially those of Mallika Badrinath's. He and now daughter have also started to tease, telling me that just because she is your uncle's dear friend's wife, you watch her shows but you never cook those things that you watch. I have previously watched those shows to learn different methods of cooking of a single item. Different people cook the same item in different way and you definitely learn something good from them.

Now I keep missing those shows, as there are other shows that kids want to watch or DH wants to watch. My mom still watches some of these shows, and infact, she even tries somethings especially those that are really good to health.

As DH is a very choosy eater I dont watch these shows to learn new recipies, but just like honeybee said, I just watch some of these shows, especially if it is microwave cooking, to learn them (as I am new to microwave cooking) and to watch those lovely crockery sets and as much as possible I try to draw a rough figure of those vessels to show to DH to get me some of them which have not materialised till date. lol.

Hi honeybee,
Yes if you see nowadays every channel has more than one show in fact.. Some try to be different but end up being too artificial.
Hi gayu,
The nannnna is a very nice observation :D Very cute indeed. And the crokery set is surely very good.. if we start coking that way, we'll end up with a lot more dishes to wash! Ooh!
Hi Ria,
Thanks for the FB. And yeah TV has become so crazy that I have started looking at everything in a funny way..
It is lot of entertainment.. but not in the way they want it to be pt across.. ;) Glad that you liked it.
Meenloch,
Yeah true. Even the video recipes in Bawarchi are good. But otherwise now chitvish ma'am and krishnamma ma'am have become my virtual cookbooks :)
And sanjeev kapoor does things in a very very immaculate way, I feel cooking has to be slightly more messy.. :D

Hi SS,
LOL at your son's comment! Even I do the cleanup after my cooking only.. And I heard that it is only SK's wife who cooks at SK's home.. Why that branding that only women shud cook at home.. :O
Hi kutty_80,
I try out different varieties in cooking as I am married and have to cook only for my husband.... Anyways, I tell my MIL interesting recipes I come across..
Hi rajmiarun,
Even my dad asks my mom the same question, as to whether she tries all the dishes she sees on tv?
But I guess women get a kick out of seeing some programs which is exclusively for them and what they do.. :)

Dear Sudha,

I completely empathise with you and will ask you to sympathise with me. Cooking in this climate where it is very hot........ and humid..........(hope the dots help you reallise how hot and humid)is a hellish experience . The moment youve done your breakfast you hear, "So whats for lunch ??" and thats almost like hearing a death sentence. By the time I am out of the kitchen I look like I was hit by a hurricane.
Forget just these cookery shows Sudha , even these daily soaps that have been trespassing our sanity, has been showing ladies coming out of the kitchen after cooking a variety as though they are feeding an army, and looking so beautiful, spic and span , bejewelled, unchipped nailpaints and hair and its extensions, blowing in the breeze(wonder from where it comes), while she walks in her stilletoes carrying silver wares.
Just wary of the day when my hubby might notice it and wonder, Why....???? How...???
Great write up Sudha, So apt and I am glad I poured my woes!

Love,
Devika

Dearest Sudha ma'am,

All I could tell is, I could not just resist to write in here he he he he he he he..That was really hilarious and you caught the glimpse of whats happening in almost many cookery shows. I accept that am not a kitchen Bee to comment, but i guess I can share what I watched !! I was out of my seat and was found on the floor.. just left with loads of laughter when my mom entered home, last week after her service schedules.

It was in a popular Tamil Channel they aired the cookery show where-in one team had done some fruit-kesari I guess !! The judge was Mrs.Chatchu (Tamil actress) and she could literally NOT BITE in (chew in) the sweet dish that was kept for her to judge. I could just sympathize on the teams as the camera man did not edit that portion of the roll !!! It was as if the team had encountered a huge venomous snake in the hall !!! LOL !!!

Devika ji, Hi fy :):)

I remember my mom's words as soon as I read your reply !!! We will sit to eat our lunch and the very next fraction of a second my mom will ask what do you prefer for the evening Tifin or the Night Dinner ?? he he he he.. though I will make fun of her then, but when I take her shoes, I do realize the fact !!!

I do agree with the climate here in India that variedly leaves all women with a Huuuffffff as soon as they leave the kitchen door-way.

Hi Devika,
I totally sympathize! I always aim at finishing my cooking asap and leave the kitchen to get some air. I think everyone who cooks will empathize as day in and day out we will keep thinking whats next, what shall I cook for lunch, what next for dinner etc. You have kind of echoed my sentiments, Devika. So glad to see your FB.
Hi Ramya,
LOL on that!! apart from people cooking, I guess we need to pity the guests/judges who judge these. But i've heard that as soon as Mallika Badrinath finishes her show, the whole crew, including the cameraman just pounce on whatever she has cooked and finish it off! :D

sudha,
me too wonder on the things you had mentioned...'theichi poona record maadhiri' ( like a broken record-player) they repeat those when they don't have anything to say.
Nowadays they add, this is good for your heart, lessens choloestrol, good for the diabetics, etc..
