416. எனைத்தானும் நல்லவை கேட்க அனைத்தானும்
ஆன்ற பெருமை தரும்
எத்தனை சிறியதாயினும் நல்லவற்றை கேட்க வேண்டும்.
அவ்வாறு கேட்பது அதற்கேற்ற பெருமையைத் தரும்.
Enaithaanum nallavai ketka anaithaanum
Aandra perumai tharum
Let every man listen to good words even if they are just a few,
for even though few, they will bring him great dignity.
417. பிழைத்துணர்ந்தும் பேதமை சொல்லார் இழைத்துணர்ந்(து)
ஈண்டிய கேள்வி யவர்
நுட்பமான அறிவும் கேள்வி ஞானமும் உடையவர், ஏதேனும் ஒன்றைத்
தவறாக உணர்ந்த போதும் பேதமையான கருத்துக்களைக் கூறமாட்டார்.
Pizhaithunarndhum pedhamai sollaar izhaithunarndhu
Eendiya kelvi yavar
Men who have deeply studied and listened to the wise,
shall not speak foolishly even if their understanding is wrong.
418. கேட்பினுங் கேளாத் தகையவே கேள்வியால்
தோட்கப் படாத செவி
கேள்வி அறிவு புகாத ஒரு செவி, கேட்கும் திறன் பெற்றிருந்தாலும்
அத்திறன் அற்றவைக்கு ஈடானவையே
Ketpinum kelath thagayave kelviyaal
Thotkap padaadha sevi
The ear into which the instructions of the wise have not entered,
is considered equal to deaf, though it may be capable of hearing.
419. நுணங்கிய கேள்விய ரல்லார் வணங்கிய
வாயின ராதல் அரிது
நல்ல கேள்வி அறிவு இல்லாதவர், பணிவான சொற்களை
உடையவராக இருக்க முடியாது
Nunangiya kelviyar allaar vanangiya
Vaayinar aadhal aridhu
Those who have not heard the refined words of the wise,
are not capable of attaining humility in their speech.
420. செவியின் சுவையுணரா வாயுணர்வின் மாக்கள்
அவியினும் வாழினும் என்
செவியின் சுவையை உணராமல் நாவின் சுவையை மட்டும் உணர்ந்த
விலங்குகளைப் போன்றோர் வாழ்வதனால் என்ன பயன்
Seviyin suvayunara vaayunarvin maakkal
Aviyinum vaazhinum en
They who know the tastes of the mouth, but not of the ear,
What difference does it make if they live or do not live here?
