411.செல்வத்துள் செல்வம் செவிச்செல்வம் அச்செல்வம்
செல்வத்துள் எல்லாம் தலை

சிறந்த கருத்துக்களை செவி வழியாகப் பெரும் செல்வமே
எல்லாச் செல்வங்களிலும் சிறந்ததாகும்

Selvathul selvam sevichchelvam achelvam
Selvathul ellaam thalai

The most precious of treasures is that of listening;
It is rightly considered the greatest wealth.

412. செவிக்குண வில்லாத போழ்து சிறிது
வயிற்றுக்கும் ஈயப் படும்

செவி உணவாகிய கேள்வி அறிவு இல்லாத போதே
சிறிது வயிற்றுக்கு உணவு தரப்படும்

Sevikkunavu illaadha pozhdhu siridhu
Vayittrukkum eeyap padum

Only when the ear gets no food for thought,
Shall one think of feeding the stomach.

413. செவியுணவிற் கேள்வி உடையார் அவியுணவின்
ஆன்றாரோடு ஒப்பர் நிலத்து

கேள்வி ஞானம் எனும் செவி உணவு உடையவர்கள்,
வானில் உள்ள தேவர்களுக்கு
ஒப்பானவர்கள்

Seviunavin kelvi udayaar aviunavin
Aandraarodu oppar nilathu

Those whose ears are fed with words of wisdom,
are equal to the Gods who have received offerings.

414. கற்றலின் ஆயினும் கேட்க அஃதுஒருவற்கு
ஒற்கத்தின் ஊற்றாம் துணை

கல்வி இல்லாவிடினும் கேள்வி அறிவை வளர்த்துக்கொண்டால்
அது தளர்ச்சி உடையோர்க்கு ஊன்றுகோல் போல் உதவிடும்
Katralin aayinum ketka agdhuoruvarkku
Orkathin ootraam thunai

Even if a man lacks learning, let him listen to the wise;
It shall stay with him and support him in adversity.

415. இழுக்கல் உடையுழி ஊற்றுக்கோல் அற்றே
ஒழுக்கம் உடையார்வாய்ச் சொல்

ஒழுக்கம் உடையோரின் சொற்களை கேட்பது வழுக்கும்
நிலத்தில் நடப்பவர்க்கு உதவும் ஊன்றுகோல் போலாகும்
Izhukkal udaiuzhi ootrukkol atre
Ozhukkam udayaarvaaich chol

The words of wisdom coming from virtuous men,
Are like a strong staff that supports on slippery ground.
