This blog is exclusively reserved for posting Thirukural - both in Tamil & English. It will also include an explanation of the Kurals in English for the benefit of all IL'ites visiting this space.

This is a collective work by a few IL'ites to share the knowledge of Thirukural amongst the IndusLadies Community.

We used to post '5 Kurals a day' earlier. In order to give more time for the readers to read it, absorb it and enrich this space with their comments, we have changed the frequency to a weekly blog posting of '10 Kurals a week'.

Hope you will all enjoy the Kurals. Do not forget to leave your comments on our effort.

Chapter31.

Avoidance of Anger.

Sellidathuk kaapaan chinankaapaan allidathuk
kaakkin en kaavaakkal en.

It is restraint that restraints rage when it can injure.
If it cannot harm, what does restraint really matter?

sella idathuch chinam theethu sellidathum
il adanin theeya piRa

Wrath is wrong even when it cannot cause injury,
but when it can, there is nothing more evil.

MaRathal veguLiyai yaar maattum theeya
piRathal adanaan varum.

Forget anger toward all who have offended you,
for it gives rise to teeming troubles.

Nagaiyum uvagaiyum kollum chinathin
pagaiyum uLavo piRa

Anger kills the face's smile and the heart' joy.
Does there exist a greater enemy than one's own anger?

Thannaitthan kaakkin chinam kaakka kaavaakkal
thannaiye kollum chinam.

If a man be his own guard, let him guard himself against rage.
Left unguarded, his own wrath will annihilate him.
