நல்குரவு
POVERTY



1041. இன்மையின் இன்னாதது யாதெனின் இன்மையின்
இன்மையே இன்னா தது.
Inmayin Innaadhadhu yaadhenin inmayin
inmaye innaadhadhu.

வறுமையை விடத் துன்பம் தருவது எதுவெனக் கேட்டால்,
வறுமையை விடத் துன்பமானது வேறெதுவுமில்லை.
If you want to know if there is anything more miserable than poverty,
you can be sure that there is nothing more painful than poverty.

1042. இன்மை எனவொரு பாவி மறுமையும்
இம்மையும் இன்றி வரும்.
Inmai enavoru paavi marumayum
immayum indri varum.

ஒருவனிடத்தில் வறுமை வரும்போது அவனுக்கு இம்மையிலும் மறுமையிலும் இன்பம் இல்லாதவாறு செய்துவிடும்.
Poverty is a curse that kills the joy
both in this life and in the next.

1043. தொல்வரவும் தோலும் கெடுக்கும் தொகையாக
நல்குரவு என்னும் நசை.Tholvaravum tholum kedukkum thogayaaga
nalkuravu ennum nasai.

வறுமையின் காரணமாக வரும் ஆசை,
ஒருவரின் நற்குடிப் பிறப்பையும் நல்ல பண்புகளையும் கெடுத்துவிடும்.
The cravings of poverty are even capable of destroying the noble ancestry and graceful speech that one may possess.

1044. இற்பிறந்தார் கண்ணேயும் இன்மை இளிவந்த
சொற்பிறக்கும் சோர்வு தரும்.
Irpirandhaar kanneyum inmai ilivandha
sorpirakkum sorvu tharum.

வறுமை, நல்ல குடியில் பிறந்தவர் வாயிலும் இழிவான சொற்களைத் தோற்றுவிக்கும்.
Poverty makes even men from a good family
utter words that are low and mean.

1045. நல்குரவு என்னும் இடும்பையுள் பல்குரைத்
துன்பங்கள் சென்று படும்.
Nalkuravu ennum idumbayul palkurai
thunbangal sendru padum.

வறுமை எனும் துன்பத்துடன் பல பெருந்துன்பங்கள் தாமே வந்து சேரும்.
The misery that is poverty brings with it
a chain of many other miseries.

1046. நற்பொருள் நன்குணர்ந்து சொல்லினும் நல்கூர்ந்தார்
சொற்பொருள் சோர்வு படும்.
Narporul nangunarndhu sollinum nalkoorndhaar
sorporul sorvu padum.

சிறந்த கருத்துக்களைத் தெளிவாக விளக்கிச் சொன்னாலும், வறியோரின் சொற்கள் கேட்பாரின்றி தம் சிறப்பை இழக்கும்.
The words of the impoverished bear no weight, though profound in thought and clear in expression.

1047. அறஞ்சாரா நல்குரவு ஈன்றதா யானும்
பிறன்போல நோக்கப் படும்.
Aram saaraa nalkuravu eendra thaayaanum
piran pola nokkap padum.

அறம் இன்றி,வறுமையை அடைந்தவன் தனது தாயால் கூட புறக்கணிக்கப் படுவான்.
He whose poverty is a result of his lack of virtue, shall be looked down upon as a stranger even by his own mother.

1048. இன்றும் வருவது கொல்லோ நெருநலும்
கொன்றது போலும் நிரப்பு?
Indrum varuvadhu kollo nerunalum
kondradhu polum nirappu?

நேற்று வந்து என்னைக் கொல்லும் அளவுக்குத் துன்புருத்திய வறுமை இன்றும் வந்துவிடுமோ ?
The poverty that almost tortured me to death yesterday,
will it come to me today too ?

1049. நெருப்பினுள் துஞ்சலும் ஆகும் நிரப்பினுள்
யாதொன்றும் கண்பாடு அரிது.
Neruppinul thunjalum aagum nirappinul
yaadhondrum kanpaadu aridhu.

எரியும் நெருப்புக்கு நடுவினில் தூங்கினாலும் தூங்கலாம், ஆனால் வறுமையின் பிடியில் இருந்தால் ஒரு துளியும் உறங்க முடியாது.
It might even be possible to sleep in the middle of flames, but it is not possible to sleep even a wink in the midst of poverty.

1050. துப்புர வில்லார் துவரத் துறவாமை
உப்பிற்கும் காடிக்கும் கூற்று.
Thuppuravillaar thuvara thuravaamai
uppirkum kaadikkum kootru.

பொருளில்லாத வறியவர் முற்றும் துறக்காமல் இருந்தால்,
அவரால் பிறர் வீட்டு உப்பிற்கும் கஞ்சிக்குமே ஆபத்து .
The best thing that can be done by the poor is to renounce;
otherwise they merely spell doom for their neighbour's salt and gruel !
