சான்றாண்மை
SAANRAANMAI

Noble Character


981. கடன்என்ப நல்லவை எல்லாம் கடன்அறிந்து
சான்றாண்மை மேற்கொள் பவர்க்கு.
Kadanenba nallavai ellaam kadan arindhu
saandraanmai merkolbavarkku.

தமது கடமைகளை அறிந்து, சான்றான்மையின் பாதையில் நடப்பவர்க்கு, நல்லவை எல்லாமே தாம் செய்ய வேண்டிய இயல்பான கடமையாகத் தோன்றும்.
Those who know their duties and follow the path of virtue, consider all good things to be done as their natural duty.

982. குணநலம் சான்றோர் நலனே; பிறநலம்
எந்நலத்து உள்ளதூஉம் அன்று.
Gunanalam saandror nalane piranalam
ennalathu ulladhum andru.

சான்றோர்க்கு நலம் அவரது நற்குணங்களால் மட்டுமே. பிற நலன்கள் எதுவும் அத்தகைய சிறப்பைத் தருபவை அல்ல.
The greatness of great men lies in their character ; all other distinctions are only good in name, and have no worth.

983. அன்புநாண் ஒப்புரவு கண்ணோட்டம் வாய்மையொடு
ஐந்துசால்(பு) ஊன்றிய தூண்.
Anbu naan oppuravu kannottam vaaimayodu aindhu saal oondriya thoon.

அன்பு, பழி பாவத்திற்கு அஞ்சுதல், பிறர்க்கு உதவுதல், எளியோரிடம் இரக்கம், உண்மை - இவை ஐந்தும் சான்றாண்மையைத் தாங்கி நிற்கும் தூண்கள்.
Love, fear of sin, kindness, compassion, and truth - these five are the pillars which support noble character.

984. கொல்லா நலத்தது நோன்மை பிறர்தீமை
சொல்லா நலத்தது சால்பு.
Kollaa nalathadhu nonmai pirar theemai
sollaa nalathadhu saalbu.

பிற உயிர்களைக் கொல்லாமை தவத்தின் சிறப்பு. பிறரைப் பற்றி இழிவாகப் பேசாமை சான்றாண்மையின் சிறப்பு.
It is the nature of a saint, not to kill;
It is the nature of a virtuous man, not to speak ill .

985. ஆற்றுவார் ஆற்றல் பணிதல் அதுசான்றோர்
மாற்றாரை மாற்றும் படை.
Aatruvaar aatral panidhal adhusaandror
maatraarai maatrum padai.

செயல்களை வெற்றியுடன் முடிப்போரின் ஆற்றல் பணிவுடன் நடப்பதேயாகும்.
சான்றோர் தம் பகைவரையும் மாற்றுவதற்குக் கையாளும் கருவியும் அதுவேயாகும் . Humility is the strength with which mighty men accomplish things; it is also the weapon with which the virtuous overcome their foes.

986. சால்பிற்குக் கட்டளை யாதெனின் தோல்வி
துலையல்லார் கண்ணும் கொளல்.
Saalbirkuk kattalai yaadhenin tholvi
thulaiyallaar kannum kolal.

ஒருவரது நற்குணத்தின் தரத்தை உணர்த்தும் உரைகல், தமக்கு ஒப்பில்லாத தாழ்ந்தவர் இடத்திலும் தோல்வியை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளும் பண்பாகும்.
The touch-stone that tests the purity of one's virtue is acknowledging defeat even at the hands of one's inferiors.

987. இன்னாசெய் தார்க்கும் இனியவே செய்யாக்கால்
என்ன பயத்ததோ சால்பு.
Inna seydhaarkkum iniyave seyyaakkaal
enna payathadho saalbu.

தமக்குத் தீமை செய்தோர்க்கும் நன்மை செய்யாவிட்டால் சான்றாண்மை இருந்தும் என்ன பயன் ?
There is no use of one having a noble character, if he cannot do a good deed, even to those who have caused him pain.

988. இன்மை ஒருவற்கு இளிவன்று சால்பென்னும்
திண்மைஉண் டாகப் பெறின்.
Inmai oruvarkku ilivandru saalbennum
thinmai undaagap perin.

ஒருவனிடத்தில் நற்பண்புகள் நிறைந்திருந்தால், அவனுக்கு வறுமையால் ஒரு இழிவுமில்லை.
Poverty is no disgrace, to the man who possesses the strength of good character.

989. ஊழி பெயரினும் தாம்பெயரார் சான்றாண்மைக்கு
ஆழி எனப்படு வார்.
Oozhi peyarinum thaam peyaraar saandraanmaikku
aazhi enap paduvaar.

காலங்கள் மாறினாலும் தாம் மாறாமல் இருப்போர், சான்றாண்மைக்கு ஒரு கடல் போல என்று புகழப் படுவார்.
Those who never change in their path, even if the world itself may change with age,
will be hailed by all as the ocean of virtue.

990. சான்றவர் சான்றாண்மை குன்றின் இருநிலந்தான்
தாங்காது மன்னோ பொறை.
Saandravar saandraanmai kundrin irunilanthaan
thaangaadhu manno porai.

சான்றோர் தமது தன்மையில் குறைந்தால், இந்த பூமியாலும் கூட தனது பாரத்தை சுமக்க முடியாமல் போகக் கூடும்.
If the virtuous fall from their worth, even the mighty earth will not be able to bear its burden.
