Music my passion 6--trouble sleeping and relaxing???
Further to my post on Ahirbhairav on indigestion, I continue my journey on my musical blogs, like ghazni mohammed, knowing that I have visitors here.I read a few posts in the forum about music for sleeping and relaxation..music on the whole is for relaxation..when you are stressed out and are suffering from insomnia, you will get irritated when you listen to fast beats or certain numbers...well I don't know about you, I definitely get irritated and get into short fuse...
Ayurveda also believes, that certain ragas definitely help in certain type of body compositions.
you need to listen to music that plays balm to your stresses and relaxes you. As I have been continously telling that we absorb the resonance or the vibrating energies from the music and it activities certain glands and organs thus helping in giving relief in certain situations.
So, on a night when I find sleep very difficult to come, what do I do, I will listen to nilave ennidam mayangadhe...or aaaja re paradesi from madhu mathi. what is common between the two..well both are based on the raga bageswari which helps in relieving stress and aiding relaxation and inducing sleep.
Classical songs:
madhura madhura mInAkSi madurApuri nilayE amba jagadamba - Dayanand saraswathi- made famous by maharajapuram...
sAgara shayana vibhO - this was composed by mdramanathan the singer, on lord padmanabha - listen to kv narayanaswamy rendition.
mohi lagey lataka guru charanan ki-meera bajan- haridas giri..
Tamil film songs...
nE ennenna sonnalum kavidai - Sirithu Valavendum
nilave ennidam nerungAdE - Ramu
mayakkum mAlai pozhudE nee pO pO - Gulebagavali ???
Mazhai Varudhu Mazhai Varudhu - ??-(do help me on the movie name)
Hindi flm Songs :
Radha nA bole nA bole is a melody by latha in her younger years...somewhere in the 50's.
Ghadi Ghadi Mera Dil Dhadke Madhumati- Evergreen melodies...
Aaja Re Pardesi-Madhumathi - Evergreen melodies...
Bedardi DagabaazJa Tu Nahin Balma Mora
Tune o rangeele kaisa jadu
Phir chhidi raat baat- an offbeat movie BAZAAR with beautiful ghazals.
Though i list the songs, for mutual learning of the raga I prefer to listen to instrumentals....and I feel convinced that instrumentals play a better role at therapy than vocal...again each ones view differ...
suggestion listen to sarod by ustad amjad ali khan and his sons .beautiful and peaceful renditions..and also hariprasad chaurasia...
Music therapy is only complementary to the treatment that is being taken and is not a stand alone treatment.

| | Another eye opening post from you dear Shanthi. Nilave ennidam is awesome. In a CD player, I put old soft melodies. It works well. Seriously. Didnt know Bageshwari was the ingredient there. Maybe our radio stations should keep this in mind and broadcast sleep inducing songs during nights |

| | Nice one Shanthi. You have written about my most favorite raga so I had to comment. Bageshwari is, was and will always be my most favorite raga. Being a night time raga, it has all the soothing qualities you mention. It also has a "happy" disposition to it. So one's mind is soothed and also feels happy at the same time. This raga is also used a lot in traditional marriage songs and music. For me, this raga also brings about a deep nostalgic emotion because this was the first raga that my Mom taught me. SS |

| | Vidya, Nilave andMegahame are two beautiful numbers....Thanks for being here....with your valuable comments... To be frank, My fil taught me to identify bagesri using the song nilave.. and meghame was used to identify Salaka bhairavi.... and that too...enakkoru mana malai nee vanga vendum.... yes, we sometimes listen to number which make us feel happy or sad, or cathartic... |

| | I have learnt from my Mom. I still sing, but not much pure classical. Would love to revive it one day. Thanks for offering to listen to me Bhimsen Joshi is one of my most favorite classical singer. I LOVE his powerful voice. Parveen Sultana has the same quality that I like in BJ's voice - powerful! Yes, I have heard BJ's rendition and like most of his renditions, this one is a league apart too! Also, Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma's santor recital on this raga is outstanding. Shanthi, is the sarod recital you are talking about the "Sarod Trilogy: Raga Bageshwari"? AC, you must listen to it. It is outta this world! Sorry, I don't have a soft copy otherwise I would've sent it to you for sure. SS |

Santoor, PT.Shivakumar I hear online..and it is also so good... there is now a series on raga for cure by the maestros in instrumental.... | | hi ma'am just read through the music blogs (havent gone to the rest yet). i am really at awe of your knowledge in music ma'am, especially the classical. i agree to a certain extent when fast beats would annoy one when you are feeling tired. but at the same time, i feel that some types of fast beats can actually rev up your mood and get you energized. but of course, it is not advisable for those who are actually seeking rest instead of energy. and true enough, listening to instrumentals are better than listening to actual songs. because, when we are listening to sings, our brains tend to focus on the words and it will start processing it. therefore our brain gets worked up instead of resting. for these past few days, i have been listening only to plain music and nothing else...mostly meditation music because i have the tendency to get abit overly stressed. worked wonders... cheers suhan |

| | Suhan, thanks for peeping in. I am just passionate about music. I have not learn t it through a guru. It is only listening. Some fast beats rev up your energy levels, when your mind is willing to be revved up. You have hit the nail when you say that we concentrate on the words and lose the feel of the music Thanks for stepping in. do visit the others and put in your valuable comments.. Listen to om by jesudas. ..and yes meditation music definitely helps. |
