Music my passion 8- Lullllllabies
Posted 23rd June 2008 at 12:00 PM by Shanvy
Lullabies are songs that lull the baby to sleep. Most of the time it is a very smooth and soothing tone without any high pitches to scare the listener.
All of us would have rocked the baby in our arms and hummed and sometimes sing all about assurances and love whether it understands or not. Whether we have sung in th e bathroom or not, mothers’ all over atleast hum a tune or a simple song to soothen the baby into a beautiful sleep. And even today my kids are known to sleep to songs ofcourse it is from a cassette player that is another story.
Lullabies are the same all over the world. A perfect note of soothing tune. Whether you sing rock a bye baby, hush a bye baby or aariraro in tamil, the tone and tune is soothing putting your loved one to sleep.
Music always has that effect. A soothing whisper, a tongue rocking sound from the mother will put the child through a sweet slumber.. When it comes to Carnatic,Nilambari is usually related to songs that could put you to sleep. And the reason could be it does not have any high pitch notes and is a straight and beautiful raga. (Hope other CM lovers will correct if I am wrong). Children know no language. That is the reason for the success of Vatsalyam Songs sung by B.Jayashree where she sings 8 different lullabies from 8 different languages..but they still make you sleep..(whether you are a baby or a adult is immaterial)
There are lot of songs that come to my mind when I think of lories (lullabies in hindi), thalattu (lullabies in tamil..) . many of you would be surprised we have thalattu for our Gods and goddesses also in tamil.
When I think of lullabies in movies the prominent ones that come to mind are..
Tamil :
Kalamidhu kalamidhu…who can forget padmini and also the lyrics of the song where the lyricist says sleep now or you will not have times to sleep as you become a girl, teenager, woman and mother..
LaaLi Laaali ---Sippikkul mutthu- a beautiful rendition in a beautiful movie. S.Janaki has done the same justice in telugu the original also.
Kanne kalaimaane- Moonram pirai- KJY lulls you into sleep..in this song.
Hindi:
AA ja rey nindiya-- Do bigha zamin (nothing can surpass this rendition by Lata Mangeshkar)
Aah ri aa ja nindiya tu lek chal kahin uran khatoley mein door -kunwara baap
Aaja nindiya aaja nainan beech samaajha –Lorie – Again a great number by latha. Sapnon ke ghar ke chat pe hai taare- Daddy – A favourite number of mine.
LAla lala lori doodh ki katori...is it from a movie …not sure… The list is endless. Hope you all add to my list….

| | Hi Shanvy, A lullaby is a soft soothing music , yes not necessary lyric oriented just plain repetitive sounds would also work as a lullaby. The soothing effect is primarily important here. I live the song from Kunwara Baap. I also love the lullaby from Sadma.. Surmayi Ankhiyon Mein Nanha munna ik sapna de ja re.In this i also love the Tamil version though im not very good with the lyrics here. Theres one more dunno the movie but the lyrics are.... Yashoda ka nandh lala Brij ka ujala hain mere lal se toh saara jag jilmilaye zuuzu zzuu .... In malayalam theres one particular favourite. Arra ro raari ra ro achande mon aararo ammakyum nhi thain ale aayirum valli pu ale. Nice blog Shanvy .Enjoyed my moments of nostalgia!! Love, DM |

| | dear shanthi, the other day they were discussing about lullaby being sad ones like yaradichalo kind and when u actually go into the meaning it is not inspiring but then many opinion may differ. i am not aware whether you know kannada song but in that she is a victim of an unwed mother and sridhar the actor takes over the responsibility of marrying her and he sing hindusthanavu yendu marayada bharatha rathnavu neenagu..wonderful composition, may you grow to be a inspiring soul in the whole of hindustan he says..we should get more collections of inspirations and i get reminded when i used to sing for priya as a baby my husband also will bring his pillow and lie down in the sofa and would request, padalaya kozhandey thoonga, haha nicememories...thanku neelambari is anyday soothing..sunkan |

| | DM, thanks for sharing your choice.Hey, how did i miss that song. the zuuzzuuuu always lingers for long after the song...And i think it is a jayaprada movie right...let me see if i can remember the name of the movie.... KJY cannot do much justice to his pronounciations in hindi. but as u say the tamil version takes the cake all the way..... I should listen to the malayalam song you mentioned. BTW what is your favourite lullaby to Niev.... |

| | sunkan, lullabies and melancholy??I too wondered some times. there is a a tinge of sadness and all the worries of the world that are sung in the lullabies in some movies. And BTW, why should somebody hit..i refer to yaar adicharo..... why not something better.. I personally feel, you should make the lullabies into happy notes... I remember seeing that song. Thanks to Doordarshan and regional movies. Nice to know that you sang to priya and chitra and hubby dear also. Way to go with sharing your memories and also reiterating on neelambari...thanks... |

| | Good exercise for the mind Shanthi! Liked your collection. Devika, the prayer from the movie Prahaar that Neiv likes was a favorite in our (Mom's) house. Very nice. Here are some I like - -Aa jaa ri aa nindiya tu aa from the movie Do Bhiga Zameen. Lat's voice is sweeter than sugar! I lovvve this song. -Aao tumhen chaand pe le jaaye movie Zakhmee. Don't think it is a lullaby but a nice soothing song that can be sung for bedtime. - Palkhon ki paalkhi mein nindiya raani jhulaa jhule - This used to come on Mumbai doordarsham way back when. Don't remember anything about this song execpt for a few lines of the song itself. SS |

| | Hi Shanvy, I do sing that song and Arunachala Siva (Aksharamana Malai) for my kids. Even before I finish the 10th stanza of Aksharamana Malai kids go to sleep. Now a days they love to listen to Meera Bajan songs. Infact both of them have been listening it on my mobile and cd player and when I sing some lines wrong, they correct me. Both of them have a real good ear for music and verses |
