Music my passion 7-Tamil Film Songs that struck a chord
For a change let me talk about film music.
Well, I love music in any form. You must be wondering what is this, she goes on talking carnatic and nothing else.you are wrong..I love film music also, but I am choosy about the lyrics, and tunes also..most of the times, I tend to tilt towards classical and soothing ones.
There have been many songs that touched a chord in me. My Dad used to always bring in MGR and Sivaji tapes whenever he used to come down to chennai. there were songs that I liked, and some of the pathos I really don't want to listen again..but still the meanings are deep ingrained..
Well the songs I could go on listing that touched a chord..but most of the time I don't remember the names of the movies...
Deivam Thanda Veedu..somehow the philosophy of that song is evergreen. And Again I am partial, may be it is one of veda' favs also.
Manithan Maari Vittan-- Somehow this song shows the progress and digress together.
Manithan enbavan deivamagalam- this shows how well a man can live...if he wants.
thoongu kanne... It really portrays the different phases in a woman's life from being a baby...
Yelu swarangalukkul ethnai padal- wow vani at her best and also a real look at life..
Mounathil vilayadum manasatchiyee- balamurali gives a already great song a height...hit your conscience.
valarntha kalai maranthu vitaal- I still don't know if it is the song or the baby that was shown in the song...
Ithu oru pon malai poluthu - Nature described at its best.
Puththam Puthu Bhoomi VEndum- Expecting a better world...
Ovvavru pookalumae- again beauty best left untampered- a very motivating song.
Margazhiyil kulitthu paaru kuliru pazhagi pogum- teaches you about simple life and simple pleasures...
yarathu sollamal nenjalli povathu- a beautiful love song
Kanaakkaanum Kangal mella - a beautiful song again...this song has affected me, a lot.I have heard, that writer Balakumaran also said that this song left him spell bound...
pachai kiligal kootodu - Love the love for family potrayed.
new york nagaram urangum- this is the song that aptly goes for me and veda these days..
Thalattu maari poonatha - It disturbs you somewhere..
Poongathu Thirubuma - A person searching for love
Aanandha Raagam - a beautiful song.
Though I list a few that have struck a chord, it does not happen everytime u hear them right, it is the situation and the ambience and the mood that together work along with a song...
Nowadays between my fil and kids, I rarely get to listen to good numbers. FIL wants only carnatic and bajans. kids want all fast beat...
Let me stop rambling
and also cut short my list here...What about your list...?? Do share them, may be i am missing on good ones...

| | Shan, Like your father, my father loved old songs too. It was from him I developed interest. When I go out, people get surprised with someone in my generation singing old songs or being familiar with them. The old ones you have listed are awesome. The motivating songs, love songs are feast to ears.. Trust me, they are most pleasing when u plug in the Walkman and sleep hearing these songs. No heavy drums, melodies are so good to ears. Thanks for bringing them to my memory. |

| | Hi Shanthi, Yet again a nice topic. Film music from the old times was more melodious and now you can herdly hear the lyrics, thanks to technology. My favourites are mostly from Kannadasan's lyrics. All that I heard when I was growing uo has left a deep imapct on tastes in film music. Ponal pogatum- you win some, you lose some Veedu varai uravu- very true to life Paramissivan Kazuthil Irundhu - the lyrics tell you how to go about life. Malaimagal Alaimagal- the finer points of womanhood. Atti vaithal yaar oruvar-All life is a stage Vanakkam pala murai- back from abroad, you don't lose values. right? Agaya pandhalile- it's like going into a dream Manithan ninapadhundu-we live in fantasy? Pal utti valatha kili, Neeyum naanuma- questioning yourself or being foster parents Poovasam- hey Ram Uyirinai enadhu urinai- Vettaiyadu Vilayadu. Added to this melodies are my all time passion. |

| | Dear Shanthi ma'am Wow!! Are you preparing yourself to enter into my college! Good!Good! Hoping to see you soon there.. I think i have not heard some of the songs (five to be accurate) in your list n i thank ur sil here for not filling all the space all by herself! I prefer melodies to peppy numbers. I love hearing to Ilayaraja sir's 80's n early 90's compositions during night time. This was the case sometime before but now irrespective of what time i hear i love melodies. Even yesterday when i was in college, i was hearing to some songs. (Now pls don’t start shooting questions at me...It was lunch break that time for us)..One side of the earphone was connected to my friend’s right ear n the other side to my left ear. And can you guess what was in front of us on the bench?? Some study materials was lying there. Internal tests are going on for us n we have test in the afternoon. If there is something I can predict in this world, it would be none other than my internal marks even before seeing the question paper! We had exam sorry test to say in our words from 2p.m to 4p.m. Around 1p.m my friend was desperately searching for something inside her bag. The thought that she might be in search of some study materials sent shock waves inside me but then quickly recovered from it seeing her hands lifting earphones from it. There she was, my friend! That moment, the slightest idea I had, to study something atleast during the last one hour vanished all of a sudden.. Usually I don’t sit n hear to all songs patiently. But think somehow even those RJ’s came to know that we had test. Melody songs were coming up one by one n we were enjoying hearing to them as if we never knew that there is something called internal tests in this world! Superb songs were played n when suddenly ‘amma yendrazhaikadha uyir illiyae’ song came up, my friend told me, “My amma comes in front of my face now. Shall we take our books in our hands at least now?” But by that time she finished her sentence, our sir entered with a bundle of question papers in his hand. ![]() I am sorry for deviating. This incident came to my mind as soon as I read the first few lines of your blog. Buddhiyulla manidharellam vetri kaanbadhillai Punnagai mannan poovizhi kannan rukmanikaga Kanna karumai nira kanna Maalai pozhithin mayakathilae naan Sonnadhu needhana Mayangugiral oru maadhu Kaadhotuthan naan paaduvaen Oru naal iravu pagal pol kanavu kanavinilae en thaai vandhaal Ammavum neeyae appavum neeyae The list is endless when it comes to old songs.. Idhu mounamana naeram ila manadhil Germaniyin senthaen malarae Idhazhil kadhai yezhudhum naeramidhu Paranthaalum vidamaataen Kannae kalai maanae Yedhedho yennam valarthaen Neeyoru kaadhal sangeetham Yenna saptham indha naeram Sippi irukuthu muthum irukuthu Andhi mazhai pozhigiradhu Manjal veyil maalai yidhae Kadothgaja kalaathara Unna vida indha olagathil osanthathu Yeah..you guessed it right…My all time favourite hero’s songs..if i keep writing, then i will stop only when Dhasavadharam hit screens.. Raagangal pathinaaru uruvana varalaaru Kaatril endham geetham kaanatha onrai En vaanilae orae vennila Raja raja chozhan naan Idhayamae idhayamae un mounam ennai Chinna thaai aval Thoongatha vizhigal rendu Kalyana thaenila kaaichadha paal nila Veesum kaatruku poovai theriyadha Aha ohhh butterfly Oru poiyavadhu sol kannae un kaadhal naandhan endru Iru vizhi unadhu imaigalum unadhu kanavugal Venmathi venmathiyae nillu ne vaanathu Unnai ninaikavae nodigal podhumae Uruguthae maruguthae Munbae va en anbae va Ninaithu ninaithu paathal nerungi arugil Kajuraho kanavilor sirpam kannil midhakudhae Moongil kaadugalae vandu munagum Kaatrin mozhi Shanthi ma’am Shanthi ma’am have you slept?? (???) ![]() And you please thank God for i have not listed some of the fast beats n other songs i like. I like to see fast beats mainly for the choreography n that too if I hear my favo heroine’s fast beat songs wherever i am i will go n sit in front of the television. ‘Aalthotta bhoopathi naanada’ is an ex. | | Meena, Don't worry for the deviation. I am also guilty as charged, went back to great college days. only weakness was cricket. i was a back bencher most of the time. so one wire on the ear with the radio on and the boys asking for the score was a common scene at class..but the prof. and lecturers used to pop sudden questions and i used to escape answering them..so in the end they did not mind my listening to commentary once or twice... ..now coming to your list, I would have really liked you to list your reason for liking the song...in yesteryears and also in today songs..and ofcourse you fav heroes song.... and i stilll have to hear many of the new songs listed... I like the un samayal araiyil naan uppa sakkaraya...that is a nice song with a complementary lyrics. there is one more song..an expression of love...don't remember the name of the movie... Kavithaigal sollava, un peyar sollava rendumae onnuthan ... |

| | Dear Shanthi ma'am Couldn't believe that you were a back bencher! But then being a back bencher n still answering questions even while listening to commentary is something great! Coming to my liking for the songs i have listed...can u notice a major similarity among them all? Yes...the clarity in the lyrics n the fine tunes. I am very particular about the lyrics. It should be understandable by all, then what for it is written if the listener is not able to figure out the words of the song? I saw Shivaji on the second day at Inox. I need not tell you about Inox. Its very decent, one cannot hear all those whistles n other sounds there. But inspite of the theater being silent i was not able to figure out the words of 'Orukudai sunlight orukudai moonlight' when i first heard it. Later that week when all the review shows on tv were talking about the make of 'oru kudai' then i realized these lyrics should belong to that song only. ![]() Un Samyalaraiyil n kavidhaigal sollava are my favos too.. The latter one is from the movie 'Ullam kollai pogudhae'.. How did i miss to mention 'Vizhiyil vizhundhu idhayam nuzhaindhu kanavil kalandha uravae..Iravum pagalum urasikollum....'!!! The movie 'Kaadhal Oviyam' has got good songs in it.. |

| | MEena Dear, I was a back bencher, and being a back bencher suited me fine, no disturbance from the class. I like the song you mentioned.it is good. nowadays lot of movie songs, i don't know the lyrics..even after listening to a few times...what is it about the lyricist...??? lthanks for the movie names.. u are welcome to come back.... |
Posted 21st March 2008 at 03:01 AM by shanvy |
| | Dear Shanthi ma'am U were lucky enough..u were not disturbed being a back bencher. But no matter where i sit, somebody will be there to come n disturb me. Yesterday i shifted from my place to the back bench which was empty then thinking i will prepare for my test in the afternoon. I was writing n studying. Hardly ten mins would have passed one of my friend came n asked, "Enna panra?" inspite of seeing infront what i was doing. I replied, "Ezhudi paathu padichutu irukaen." He said, "Sari enaku ne ezhudara notebook test apo kudu." I "yedhuku?" for this he replied, "Padichu paathu ezhudhathan." I had a hearty laugh for sometime before getting into study again. Like this, if i start studying, somebody will always come n chit-chat for every five to ten mins. Even i don't get to know the lyrics of few songs of new movies. But my friends especially boys they like songs of type in which lyrics are not clear n are western based..I remember once we were discussing about caller tunes n i said, "I am going to keep kaatrin mozhi as my caller tune."(It was the time when mozhi was released) My friends retored back, "Unaku yaarum call panna vaendana adha directa sollidu adhukunu ipdila call panravangala insult pannadha." Now, Bheema has got nice songs in it. Mudhal mazhai is my caller tune now right from the time the audio release was made. Usually i change my caller tune every month or once in atleat two months but for the past four months this song is my caller tune. It is not that i like this song very much but i am looking out for a good new song to replace mudhal mazhai...i have not found one yet. ![]() Among the new songs, 'Akkam pakkam yaarum illa boologam veandum', 'Vizhiyil vandhu vizhiyil' from the movie Kireedam', 'Mudhal mazhai', 'Enadhuyirae enadhuyirae enakenavae ne kidaithai' from Bheema, 'Minnalgal koothadum mazhaikaalam' from 'Polladavan' are all nice to hear.. |
