The day dawns with the Margazhi Thingal and Kausalya Subraja vying with each other from every other household, and I suppose this is the only month where M.S.S suprabatham fares a second to the Thiruppavai’s and Thiruvembavai recitals and the same signals the arrival of Margazhi .

The significance of Margazhi is more because Lord Krishna in Gita says `Among the months, I am Margazhi’

The mornings start with the beautiful kolams drawn by the women and girls..though gone are the days when it was drawn with rice flour with red borders with a cow dung put in between with a pumpkin flower in the centre (this is still seen in many villages). The kolams drawn during this season were inspirations to link Fibonacci series with the intricate patterns.

The biting chill definitely helps in clearing off all the fog in the minds, and have a clear mind to wake up the gods.

There is small lamp that is kept near the door step. The logical reason could be, the winter dawn is too dark and the people who go in for a dip in the ponds and rivers need to have some light.

Tamilnadu definitely becomes the beehive of activities this month. Chennai metamorphoses into the happening place for the local residents and NRI’s with the luring ambience of the cultural traditions. The month long treat for all the aesthetic senses.

The people join bhajan groups and go around the streets, visiting temples in between singing bhajans with the full vigor that they are not aware of the nipping cold..

There are special discourses in the temples with the highlight being the hot pongal that
is served as Prasad. (Veda says in his childhood, he used to wear the must namam, to go in to get his share along with his other friends..)

The month long show, of kalakshepam, upanyasam, harikatha, namasankeertam apart from the kutcheries (music concerts where carnatic music forms the major part) forms the margazhi festival. Margazhi Festival was started in the December of 1927 with the founding of the Madras Music Academy, and the same tradition is continued till date..the month of December 15-January 15, Chennai adorns the role of connoisseur of Arts to the hilt.

Apart from this, the month has special festivities that culmitate with the start of the auspicious month of Thai. Vaikunta Edadesi, Arundra Dharsan, Hanumantha Jayanthi, Ramana Maharishi’s Jayanthi and Seshadri Swamigal’s Aradhana. .

For me, margazhi means my FIL starts with the pooja at home, his Vishnu sahasranamam recital (without which I cannot relate to pooja at home ) before starting off to his bajans and then the Pongal Prasad comes home in boxes, along with the tulasi.

I think I am one of the lucky ones who gets to have the Prasad delivered at home, the TV and the Radio giving me the recordings of most concerts happening around..what more can I ask when I am already being showered with so much love and blessings from HIM.

OH, I could go on and on..but would stop here to tune in to your experiences…

    Gowri,

Great to listen to your experiences.. even today I see lot of mamas/maami's going around...infact the bajans sounds on the streets remind me though i am sitting in the modern cosmopolitan city we are still rooted to tradition..

Being a fan of Papanasam sivan, how can I forget mentioning his bhajan sessions that were a treat to the mylaporeans that used to happens in the mada streets around the kapaleeswarar temple..

MIL used to fondly recollect about joining him along with his daughter and the great singers who used to join him during these sessions..

Margazhi and memories go hand in hand i think...
