Sriman Narayan (Lord Vishnu) had sent his Sanku, Chakram, sword, Gathai, Kausthupam, Vaijeyanthi malai and the Nithya Suris as Azwars in this world for the salvation of mankind (Jivathmas.) Azwars are esteemed higher than the sages. The sages performed Tapasya, Homams and Yaghyas to attain mukthi by controlling their karmendriyas, whereas Azwars lived in this world among the ordinary people and lead an ordinary life. They professed that ordinary mortal could attain mukthi through Bakthi. They composed Divya prabandams in Tamil which contains the essence of Vedas. Hence they are called Tamil Marai. The Prabandams are also called as Azwarkal Aruliseyal. They explain the relationship between Jiwatma and Paramatma. The Nalayira Divya Prabandam that contains all the Pasurams of the twelve Alwars were lost. But Nadamunikal took great efforts and revived them through Nammazwar after chanting “ KaNNinuN SiRuthambu” twelve thousand timesAs I had narrated above that Lord Vishnu’s Divyayudams (Weapons ) Ornaments and Nithya Suris ( Those who always live in Vaikuntham ) were born as Azwars. Here I am giving you the list:

1. Poykai Azwar - Sanku

2. Buthathazwar - Gathai

3. Peyazwar - Sword

4. Thirumazisai Azwar - Chakram

5. Madurakavi Azwar Kumudan-Nithya Suri

6. Nammazwar -Senai Mudaliyar –Nithya Suri

7. Kulasekara Azwar Kausthupam- A rare gem worn by Lord Vishnu

8. Periyazwar - Garudan

9. Andal Bhumi Piratti

10. Thondaradipodi Azwar - Vanamalai ( Vyjeyanthi Malai)

11. ThirupaNazwar Maru

12. Thirumangai Azwar - Sarangam

The birth of Azwars were instrumental to spread Bakthi Neri (Devotion to Lord Vishnu ) who was supposed to be the only one to help jiwathmas to attain mukthi/liberation.
