Bapu has been urging me the whole of the last three days to ask you a question. But I said , " leave them alone, it is a long weekend and they are all busy"
" Doing what ", he asked.
" Going out for a short trip , or completing their leftover jobs. Moreover Diwali is round the corner, redoing their houses maybe, whatever, but I do not wish to disturb them."

"But is 2nd supposed to be a picnic day?"he urged again.

"See it is followed by two offdays...what do you expect the people to do? "

But looking at his sad contenance I felt bad, so I added,"what to do , these are trying times bapu, the world is changing and with recession there is hardly anytime to enjoy, due to overload of work.Do not begrudge them a couple of off days"

"And who will sit down to talk about you, except some politician ....who does only to showoff that they still have some values left. And yes offcourse the drunkards."

"The drunkards? And what does that mean",
"Yeah, some will not get their drink today, and some would have perforce bought it yesterday, and will drink at home itself."

"Oh !my my....", he was nonplussed.

"See just as we believe in different GODs , similarily, our expectations from our chutti are also different."

"Muzzy, today you are not talking from the same heart, as you always do of me."

"See Bapu , today I am not talking of what I think, I am telling you about the others' feelings. And we cannot deny them the right to think in their own way."

"O.K.! tell me the question you wish to ask." I finally gave in.
"Am I relevant today?" And then looking at my expression added " All over everybody is asking this very quetion , there are debates planned for the same. And I feel they would not do so if I was .And there is this guy who tweeted...thats the way you say , right.....and caused a debate in the blog world too.."

"Oh Bapu, how can you think so, you see, there are so many programmes today..." , but he would not let me pacify.

"I know what the politicians are doing, but I have as such given up on them. Today I am bothered about my people, who INSPITE of the politicians have been trying to find the right path. Today when even the religious gurus are fooling them, how are they managing, am I relevant in guiding them for a better tommorow. Go muzzy , go and ask."
And what else can a follower do....do as instructed.

    great idea

    Dear chitra
Its is right that to teach the dignity of labour, we should first inculcate the very habit in the children, these values cannot be learnt in a classroom, but out in the open field.
Thanks for a thought provoking fb.

when we were young we used to go to school and clean the surroundings and learnt to keep things neat and clean making us realise the importance of doing any work with dignity. Ask any child about Gandhi and they know only Rahul and Sonia. Can we blame them?

    responsible parents- bright future

    Dear Shanvy
So happy to hear about your discussing the Mahatama with your children.
Its said ..as you sow so shall you reap.
Its true when told in context of the children. When we teach them good values, we are sowing the seeds of a good future for our country, our society , our family and for the world as a whole...esp with the world having shrunk nowdays.
Only if someone had taken care of the people whom you saw on t.v.
Sad but true that parents do not wish to send their kids for flag hoisting. This year in my son's school it was announced that anyone who misses the flag hoisting will be marked absent for a whole week.
Imagine the principal had to take such measures. Go to a village and even today you will see not only the students , but even passers by standing to watch this ceremony. They on the whole are much more respectful and sincere.
Thank you for such an elaborate fb.

For me, I can say contently that me and the kids remembered Gandhi on 2nd and did talk about it. I feel as a parent it is a responsibility.

Was it on 2nd or 3rd that one of the Channels had a candid question on the streets, do you think it should be holiday or working day.

"One kid (19/20) said, if we do not have a holiday how will we remember gandhiji."
"Another, i thank government for giving me this holiday to destress myself."

OMG, Gandhi would definitely turn in his... hearing the respect he has, or would he say thank God my birth has been beneficial to somebody even if it is for their own holidays.

Oh Boy!the man who twitters did he really mean it or did it just to get attention.

On a pondering note, don't you think we should not have national holidays on independence day at the least. there is no respect for that day other than it is a holiday. many parents do not want to lose their beauty sleep, that they don't even send the kids for the flag hoisting at schools. the school teachers are at home. (i have 8 teachers in the surrounding.)

The concept of holidaying has tarnished the relevance of the national holiday.

Even Doordarshan that used to religiously give programmes related to his works has changed according to the tastes of people.

Many do not even watch the flag hoisting broadcasted live on TV,as they are busy watching the cine stars interviews that gets broadcasted live. (where is the stars says I celebrate i.day with my people....how true is another question)

sorry to have taken more space
