As a south Indian, I LOVE rice. I crave so much for even plain white rice. With spicy sambhars and tongue tickling rasams, it's delliiiicciiiooouuuussssssss. Who can forget the famous " Thacchi mammam" ( Curd Rice).

When dieting sees rice is one of the major factor for weight gain, it feels very bad. White rice has enriched carbohydrates, which is not good for health if one doesn't exercise. For someone who does work out, avoiding rice helps faster weight loss.

Have you all seen old south Indian movies, where farmers would heap the rice like a mountain on their plates and eat. For the amount of work they did, they needed lot of carbohydrates and all of this would have got digested by the time they eat again .

For any food, I feel, being able to relish it, is a blessing. Having someone to cook a good food for us or being able to make good food is a blessing again. I have no qualms in saying that I love good food and I don't miss any chance to satisfy my taste buds. After coming here, cooking has become another dimension to my personality and the love for rice persists. I take a cup everyday.

On a lighter note, actress Sameera Reddy ( She will be acting in Varanam Aayiram with surya and has acted in taxi no. 9211), loves rice.

What do you think about eating rice ? How much do you consume in a day ? Do you work out ?

Dear iLites do share your opinion.

    Oh Meenloch,

I love rice too. In fact, I cannot imagine not eating rice for even one day. For some prejudiced reason, I feel that I have had lunch only if I take rice. Everything else is like a tiffin or snack and can't take its honors as a meal :( I remember my dad & grandad, even being picky on the breed ( IR8, Ponni et al). My thatha, used to say that he can judge how better a cook one is based on the way he/she cooks rice ;) My grand-dad used to get those sacks of nellu at home and took great pride in processing rice out of it. I used to feel his pride every time the hot steaming soft rice was placed on his banana leaf. If the rice is steaming hot, I would love to have it cooked mashy since it goes best with sambar and rasam and for all these mixed-rice recipes, it is a sight to behold to see a "vera vera" rice. And eating in banana leaf, carefully tackling the running rasam, is an art that I am really proud to master. I keep telling my cousins who stumble that it takes practice to push the rasam rice to the center and in the process take a handful and stuff to your mouth soon enough to have your hands pushing them back again before they run out of the leaf , making sure you do chew and send the food in time ! Oh man, thatz what I call co-ordination & co-operation.

    Dear Gayu,

Excellent comment...It felt as if there was banana leaf and hot rice with spicy rasam just poured fresh, before me and needless to say, my craving has increased now ..

I happened to see thacchu mammam in your favourites list in your profile.
You seem to have lot of history with rice,!!

    "udiri udiri" rice - mmmm..
You are lucky to have mastered the art of eating sathumudu (rasam) sadam on banana leaf. For me it's still a struggle. It runs way too fast.

Vakkanaiya keezha urkarndu yelai le sappadara madiri varuma ?

Have you heard "Bombay Sister's" Bhojanam Seiyya Varungal ?

    Dear Meenloch,

What a photo? Ippadi oru photo pottutu if you ask opinion about rice what will you get otherthan 'yes'.

Ok, now coming to the point...I love rice. It happens to be in the peak when we travel from India to US. Isn't it?

Weight reduction can only be possible cutting down on the rice. No second opinions. I'm not heavy as such. But, I easily increase a bit when my diet changes with even a little more of calories. So, I always watch my plate and stick to gym.

But, after I reduced rice I noticed wonders. I totally avoided hard exercises in gym, no gym in other words. I stick to onething, though. I never sit for half-an-hour even if I eat a piece of chips or anything. I schedule my household works for my post-food session. I don't watch my plate, now. I eat snacks and high-calorie foods, often. Hope my metabolic rate has got increased.

    Good, right? I'm so happy.

Tell me where you found this photo. Tempts, yaar.

Nice Blog Vidya. Who does not love rice. and especially the lovely spread served on our vazhai illai. Sure mouthwatering.
Now i eat rice too, but i measure it in a small cup and spread it over three courses. So my actual intake of rice in a day is very less. ofcourse i fill up with veggies etc.... before the rice comes, so just a little bit goes a long way in satisfying me.
    Keep blogging

    Oviya ,
I know this photo is kinda too tempting.
Moderation is good. But things like rice, need continuous "Warding off temptation".

Good practice, not sitting endlessly. Like you I plan house-work after food. These days I either talk on phone or watch tv. I take an afternoon power nap too.

The photo - I found it on google images.

    Thanks for sharing your ideas
