Tamil director Balachander's favourite raga is Sahana. He loves it, probably because it merges well with the serial stories and is full of emotions and feelings.

The first on the list is from Rayil Sneham
Balachander's rayil sneham
( Try this with evening chai...The experience is beaaaauuuutiful).
The title song of serial "Sahana" also is set in the same raga. It can be found here
Tamil serial songs

A Thyagarajar song set in sahana is here
Vandhanamu

Coming to tamil movies
Kizhakku cheemayile

Balachander's Paarthale parvasam has a song
Anbe Sugama

The lyrics of these songs are noteworthy.

One of the very famous old melodies would be
Paarthen Sirithen

Technical details of Sahana
28 harikAmbhOji janya
Aa: S R2 G3 M1 P M1 D2 N2 S
Av: S N2 S D2 N2 D2 P M1 G3 M1 R2 G3 R2 S

Enjoy the beauty of Sahana...one of my favourite raga..

Add your list to this.
Does anyone here know what is the Hindustani equivalent ?

Dear Meenloch,

I've no idea about Carnatic MUsic. So sorry that I'm not into the main theme of this blog.

But, thanks a million for giving the link for 'Rayilsneham'. Reminded me of a very good serial. Will search the link for the whole story. Please, let me know if anyone has any idea about this.

Oviya,
Quick answer. Rajshri.com has it all under Tamil tab. Rayil sneham is available as two 1.5 hrs episodes there.

Usha,
Thanks for sharing this. Do you think there is any link between devagandhari and Sahana ? Devagandhari is seen in the famous "Ksheera Sagara" by yesudas.

Meenloch - Thanks a ton for the Rail Sneham link. I remember this song and was searching for the video.

I do not know much about raagas. But your links will give me a good insight.

My pleasure nivedi. As I told Oviya, you can see that serial in Rajshri.com. It has some of the old tamil serials with very good picture quality.

Sahana raagam in Carnatic Sangeetham ihas the same name in Hindusthani Sangeet and this once again confirms that BOTH these BEAUTIFUL streams have sprung and blossomed FROM THE SAME SOURCE.
THEY SHOULD BE RIGHTLY REFERRED UNDER THE SAME BANNER OF BHARATHIYA SANGEETHAM.

My favourite raaga after Bhairavi and kalyani. Is there any similiarity between Sahana and Punnagavarali? kanaka
