Housewife and Engineer ?
Currently I am the former of the two. I always think about a fact. Any of our fields of interest, or our domain of business attract us because of the scope they provide.
Now as an Electronics and Communication Engineer, the challenges in my field are to Optimize the bandwidth usage, reduce the size of chips used, make communication more affordable, reliable and reaching the corners of my country.
If you take some other profession, let's say someone in bio line has lot of scope. World still does not have a cure for cancer. Even recently one of my loved one passed away. There is no permanent cure for Diabetes or for many diseases. So doctors, scientists and genetic engineers have so much to work on. So much money flows into these businesses and there are zillion brains working on finding the answers to some questions.
Next if we consider a space scientist, we are looking if life is possible elsewhere in the solar system.
A geologist is concerned with Global Warming and other Natural calamities which might endanger the earth. His job would be to find out information and reduce the impacts
Being a housewife can also be counted as another profession. The challenges you work on are
1) Taking care of everyone else. It's an empowering/ enhancer type profession. You work as a nurse/caretaker.
2) Managing finances, sharing this work with your partner. You can be called a mini accountant or an Auditor.
3) You are conscious about what people eat and make variety of dishes. You play the role of being a Dietitian and a Chef.
4) You teach your kids good habits and even their school lessons. You are a Teacher in this case.
5) You clean the house and keep things organized. You also remind others of their appointments. A personal secretary now.
6) You write on Indusladies and elsewhere. You become a Chota/ Kutti Freelance Writer.
7) Apart from all this you go out and do men's work like going to banks, meeting necessary people, decide on investments, properties etc.... You are a half-husband too.
Indeed a diversified set of responsibilities and challenges and which other profession gives you so many different and varied roles to play. you may not be the best in each of these roles, but it s a bit of each one of the above and I am sure no one can deny me when I say ' All these roles get more meaningful and better as days pass by"...You can only get better and better....There are so many challenges in all these which willkepp one active and busy for the rest of the life.

Dear Meenloch,
Your write-up is excellent and brought to my mind the situation we had in our house. My two elder sisters were in the same position, one a housewife and the other going for job. All the jobs you have listed for a house wife my sister was doing. But, still people gave more importance and respect to the other sister who was working. It went to the extent that when my sister who was house wife bought new sarees, people commented ' You are going to be in the house only so why do you need such good sarees '. If both sisters are there say in the evening when my working sister has returned from her job, my mother will ask her only, ' shall I get you coffee, tea or horlicks?' and not to the other sister. What I mean to say is that housewife however good and responsible she is, it is taken for granted.Posted 28th November 2007 at 03:31 PM by Tamildownunder

Dear MeenLoch:
Very nice writeup about the eternal situation concerning women and something unique to women only... . Though you have neatly outlined all the benefits at being home, TDU has so rightly pointed a practical situation. Which I think is so true. When his sister bought the new saree, the comment was since she was at home why did she need it.. I dont know how many years before this happened but now its even worse.. Even other women scoff at you and clearly show their contempt.. I believe you do what you have to and then bear all this other nonsenses..... You have been writing so well... Also to mention is the immense benfits the family derive from this... keep bringing more articles to think and talk about.keep blogin....Posted 28th November 2007 at 04:00 PM by Anandchitra

rightly said MeenaLoch.
I am the only dil who is not working outside the house namely an office. the other 2 dils work--one as a physio-therapist and the other used to work but now teaches music, in other words, she is earning.
You can understand how much i must have gone through with my mil-- who always speaks of the other two.
I have no ill-feelings towards them, but it is us who takes care of her with the only reason that they are working!

The input to this post is from my mother and all the ladies I have seen in my life, including the ones here on Indusladies who are so active in almost every domain under the sun including the ones like Investment, Stock Market decisions. I will not be exaggerating if I say 'A modern day woman is everything and can be everything she wants'.
I cannot agree more about what you all said. Housewife's position is undervalued. All through my childhood my mother urged me to have a career, go for work and earn etc.
One of the many ironies in this world indeed.Posted 28th November 2007 at 08:33 PM by MeenLoch

You have summed up so very sweetly and intelligent I must say...Just one reply to all but very neatly and creatively done... I would just like to add one small...since you mention undervalued...by whom...my family keeps me on a pedestal and throne and all... to my husband theres no else like me...so if the people who matter most value you no job is too smal... or is it no job too big.....kepp blogin..you have great style....Posted 28th November 2007 at 09:07 PM by Anandchitra
