Here you will find some basic information on how to care for your jewellery.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
The most important thing you should do when you receive jewellery from anywhere is to clean it.
Your best bet is to use Antibacterial Soap and Water to thoroughly clean the jewellery.
I generally use “Lux” liquid to clean my jewellery.
I don’t know it is the same what we are now getting in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:country-region><st1:place>India</st1:place></st1:country-region>.
Weekly I will clean all my bangles, chain, rings and my ear drops – jumka – jemiki in the Lux liquid.
I will juts take luck warm water and put one spoon liquid and I will put all these jewels in that.
After 1 hour I will take themout one by one and brush them with old tooth brush.
And rinse with cold water.
That is all all your jewellery will glitter like new one.
Whenever I meet somebody new they will surely ask me about my jewellery “Are they new one?” J <o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
You should always avoid cleaning your jewellery with bleach or other cleaners containing chlorine, and also to avoid wearing it when in contact with bleach. <o:p></o:p>
Stone settings can easily be damaged if handled roughly, but Diamonds are very hard and therefore resistant to damage, unless they are rubbed together which can cause scratching and abrasion to their surfaces making them dull and less transparent.<o:p></o:p>
Ruby and sapphire are easy to clean in the same way as diamonds, but it is sensible to ensure that stones cannot rub against other stones during cleaning.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
</SPAN><o:p></o:p>When jewellery is worn next to the skin, it will become covered in oily debris mainly composed of dead skin, grit.
Everyday use and work also contaminates the jewellery being worn covering it in grease especially at the back of jewellery settings and stones.<o:p></o:p>
</SPAN>
Clean your pearl jewellery with soft cotton after wearing and place a cotton in the box and then place the jewel.
This will increase the life of the pearl.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
For silver jewellery purchase good quality well made silver jewellery items as they will last longer.<o:p></o:p>
Clean your silver jewellery regularly using a mild soap and warm water.
For heavy dirt or tarnishing use a quality silver cleaning dip or jewellery cleaning cloth.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
Keep the silver jewellery in the same box or the same butter paper to avoid quicker tarnishing.<o:p></o:p>
You can keep ‘chalk pieces’ with silver jewellery to prevent blackning.<o:p></o:p>
<o:p></o:p>
</SPAN>Dont share jewellery especially earrings as this can cause the transfer of infections.<o:p></o:p>
Don’tMix your silver and gold jewellery together as this again can cause damage and may result in quicker tarnishing than normal.<o:p></o:p>

Hi krishnamma,
Wonderful tips..I would just add...use soapnut..just crush one or two soapnuts..in a little hot water...then dip the gold jewellery in that water..for 10-20 minutes...then use a old brush and clean..they are sparkling as new..
no fear of losing gold, or no abrasions...as soapnuts are natural..and are available in most of the provision stores or nattu marundu kadai...Posted 30th October 2007 at 11:49 PM by Shanvy

Dear Saraswathi,
You are correct. If we keep the silver items or vessels in the same pink paper (which they used to pack and give us when we purchase silver items) the colour of silver will be the same. You can even put chalk pieces with silver items so that it will not turn black. I used to put some chalk pieces in my bank locker too.Posted 10th February 2008 at 11:41 PM by krishnaamma
