I was just watching from my patio yesterday evening where i saw three kids riding bicycle on the walkway. After seeing that my mind started travelling down the memory lane towards my childhood days.
In my childhood days i was residing in an apartment and hence had a lot of friends to play. Driving a Cycle was a dream for me in childhood. I pestered my Father to teach me to drive a bicycle. Finally the day came too. My father rented a bicycle and i started my classes.

First problem was with balancing.I used to wonder how come people are driving straight in a bicycle. In a week i learnt somewhat how to balance. Then came the turns.Riding in a turn was like a nightmare for me.Once i reach near the turn i would get down, walk along the U turn and then again ride.My Father used to laugh at me seeing this. Then, finally i learnt the turns too.During this time,i fell down twice and wounds became the trademark of my Cycle lessons.
Then,i started asking for a bicycle for me.My Father was a little hesitant to buy it for me. My Thatha came to my rescue and got me a brand new BSA SLR Brown colour bicycle. After that all my weekends were spent with my sweet bicycle.I used to wash it,apply oil to spokes to keep it shining. Then do pooja for it on Ayutha Pooja day.Even to the shop across the road,i used to go in my cycle only. There used to be cycle race among friends too.
Learning to ride cycle was like learning Mobility which gave great excitment to me in my childhood days.
Nowadays there are a lot of models in India designed specially for girls like the Lady Bird. But earlier days it was not like that.
These were my Bicycle Memories. How about U?????????????????

| | I just hopped onto my brother's bike and went down the slope just like that. It is another thing that i mastered the bike only after several very painful falls. My best friend and i used to go around all over the town on biking trips (like the charecters in our favorite Enid Blyton books) imagining ourselves as private detectives I had my very own bike while doing my masters in Madhya Pradesh. Lot of my classmates used to commute by bike so baught myself one. For 2 yrs used to bike for 5+ km each way to & from university. Looking at my pictures from those days, my daughter says I was bone skinny like a model. Now how many hours i spend on the stationary bike in the gym, doesn't seem to make any difference :< |

| | During lunch i shared my bicycle experiences to hubby and after lunch logged in IL and saw your blog.I had the memory of the day my brother and me returned from school and there was a BSA SLR parked at the front gate of our house. We did not believe for some time that my father bought cycle for us(we both used to share one). One day we parked at a Temple gate and went inside. There was no cycle when we returned. We started searching and found a person with our cycle at a distant doing some thing facing other side.We ran to him took our cycle and just vanished from there. That was adventure that time in our friends group. In one cycle race i fell and the injury needed one week dressing.Ohh sweet memories. |

| | Hi Shantha, Brought back some lovely memories. I learnt cycling in Vadodara, in the famous Sayaji bag where they had a separate area set out for learning cycling. They had a mini models of main roads with all the traffic lights and signals and on some weekend even mock policemen . They used to rent out cycles for 50 paise for an hour... It was great fun. Don't know if it is still there now. They also had the cutest choo choo train for kids ... Vandhana |

| | Bicycle... Hmm .. Yummy Childhood thing. Childhood make everything look so nostalgic and dear. I guess its the innocence and our lack of distractions. I too have loads of memories of Bicycle. I learnt riding when I was 12. I used to bike with one friend from colony. Both of us were chatter box and we were pretty good with cycle too. I biked my way to school. Now In US we recently bought mountain bikes for two of us. It s still the same fun. We both love it still. We go at times for long biking trails here. Enjoyed your post thoroughly . Thanks for a nice topic. Ria |
