Mauritius Part III Lets all have a Cool Undersea Walk............

Posted 20th December 2007 at 01:55 PM by kasisheela
Let me explain to you all about the rest of the places of interest and the activities in mauritius which was the most exciting part of our trip..................

Black River:
This is a separate district in Mauritius. It is said that this place got its name because of the veery poor rainfall it receives every year. The chamarel coloured earth and the Tamarin Falls are located in this district.

Grand Bassin:
This is called the Holy Sacred Lake of Mauritus.People also call it as the Holy Ganges of Mauritius and the Shiva Temple close to it is called the Kasi of Mauritius. The Shiva Temple is built in the Style of temples in North India. There are also deities of Krishna and Radha in that temple. There is also custom in Mauritius to held marriages in Temple.Even when we visited, there was a marriage going on in the temple.Outside the temple there was a huge Siva Statue under construction.

Natural History Museum
This musuem is where we can know all natural facts about Mauritius. The information about the National Bird of Mauritius Dodo which is extinct now can be found here.

I had to also mention the Kali Temple we visited in Mauritius. It is surrounded by Sugarcane Plantations on all sides and the temple even though small had a great divine temple. The alangaram made to the kali was very beautiful and gave us a very good darisan.

Coming to the sports activities they are the most exciting part of everything, first comes the

Ride in the sea in a glass bottom boat................this was a very exciting feeling to watch the crystal clear sea, water herbs, fishes and the whole world undersea from above. Then next comes the

Undersea Walk................the most thrilling, exciting, once in a life time experience (irukatha enna, enakkum en husbandkkum swimming vera theriyathu) Mauritius has many small isalnds surrounded and when they take us a ride in between the main land and these islands there are wood platforms floating in the sea for this underseawalk which has ladders to take us undersea. Three pairs at a time are taken undersea with a guide in charge for that. Before that all are made to sit and the guide takes class as how to show actions when undersea. First two stones fixed to a belt was tied to our body so as to keep us inside water. Then we were given helmets and they were connected with tubes to oxygen cylinders. Separate cameras can be rented from them at a cost of Rs.300 each.We can take photos undersea and then roll is given to us. Water shoes were given. Then the most thrilling time came..............the guide started pulling us inside water and there we were in an entirely different world...............the water world. We touched the bottom and started walking. Then guide came to us and gave fish food in our hands and in no time fishes were near us to grab them. They did not harm us in anyway. We were about 15-20 minutes undersea and then came back. Wow!!!!!!!!!!!! what an experience. The Cost for this is Rs.650/- per person which was included in our trip itself.

There is one more submarine which takes us under water for about two hours. It costs about Rs.3000/-. Certificates are issued to participants too.

Para sailing.................the next most thrilling experience which is also done from platforms in the sea. We are tied to a parachute which is in turn tied to a speed boat. When it starts rushing up we raise high on the sky.............have a merry round high on the sky around the sea for 15 minutes and land back again in the platform. A pair of two is take for this para sailing. Initially I was too frightened but after sailing..........felt like doing it one more time..............The most thrilling part is that in the middle of the ride the speed boat reduces the speed and we come down slowly. Once our legs touches the water, the speed boat again speeds up and we raise up too.

There are many other water sports available and they are more convenient for water lovers and swimmers.

There are many travel agencies who book Tours for Mauritius. We booked it through the Thomas Cook Travels. It is very convenient as they take care of everything. The traveling time from Chennai to Mauritius was 6 hours. There are different kinds of packages available. The packages we chose was Rs.47000/- per head for 6 nights and 7 days and it included,

  1. 1.Visa arrangements
  2. 2.Air Fare
  3. 3.Accommodation in 3 star hotel
  4. 4.Sight Seeing arranged in alternative days 5.with a tourist guide
  5. 6.Food (special Candle Light Dinners)
  6. 7.Activities like para sailing and underseawalk
The facilities given were convenient and we had a trouble free, very comfortable trip to Mauritius.

As far as shopping is concerned, a heavy bargain in local markets can bring down the prices like anything. Mauritius T Shirts are famous and there are many small gifts to buy too.

I post herewith pictures. Undersea walk pictures are the ones taken from Internet.

Dear Sunkan,
Thanks a lot for stepping in and posting the comments.Ya what u have told is right. One more thing which i saw was that Temple Priests are treated with high respect in Mauritius. This is not so with all priests in Tamilnadu.People tend to get blessings from them by touching their feet wherever they see them,be it a market place or even roadside.
