Abandonment of Reserve

1131. காமம் உழந்து வருந்தினார்க்கு ஏமம்

Kaamam uzhandhu varundhinaarkku emam madalalladhu illai vali.

காதலியை விட்டுப் பிரிந்து துன்புற்ற ஆண்களுக்கு, மடலூர்தலை விட வேறு சிறந்த வழி எதுவும் இல்லை.
To those who are seperated from their lovers and suffer the pangs of seperation, there is no other way out left, other than to ride the palmyra horse*.

( * In ancient tamil literature, there is reference to an act called 'madal erudhal or 'madal urdhal' which is roughtly translated as 'riding a palm horse'.
A hero whose love is spurned or rejected, makes a horse shaped object using rough palm stems and sits on it. He makes a flag and paints it with his lover's figure.
He will usually wear tattered clothes,and his friends will then carry him around, and along the way the lovesick man will shout insulting things at the woman and her family, in the hope that the woman, unable to take the shame caused by all this, agrees to marry him.This was a last ditch attempt the males took recourse to. )

1132. நோனா உடம்பும் உயிரும் மடலேறும்
நாணினை நீக்கி நிறுத்து.
Nona udambum uyirum madalerum
naaninai neekki niruthu.

பிரிவின் துயரைப் பொறுக்காத உடலும் உயிரும், நாணத்தை நீக்கி விட்டு மடல் ஏறத் தயாராகின்றன.
The body and soul which are suffering from anguish, have lost their sense of shame, and have consented to ride the palm-horse.

1133. நாணொடு நல்லாண்மை பண்டுடையேன் இன்றுடையேன்
காமுற்றார் ஏறும் மடல்.
Naanodu nallaanmai pandudaiyen indrudayen
kaamutraar erum madal.

நாணமும் ஆண்மையும் கொண்டவனாகத் தான் முன்பு நான் இருந்தேன் - இன்றோ, பிரிவுத் துயர் கொண்டவர் ஏறும் மடல் மட்டுமே உடையவனாக இருக்கிறேன்.
I was once reserved and manly - but today, all i possess is the palm-horse of the love-lorn.

1134. காமக் கடும்புனல் உய்க்கும் நாணொடு
நல்லாண்மை என்னும் புணை.
Kaamak kadumpunal uikkum naanodu
nallaanmai ennum punai.

என் நாணமும் ஆண்மையும் ஆகிய தோணியை காதல் எனும் பெரு வெள்ளம் அடித்துக் கொண்டு போகிறது.
The raft of my modesty and manliness, has been swept away by the strong currrents of passion.

1135. தொடலைக் குறுந்தொடி தந்தாள் மடலொடு

மாலை உழக்கும் துயர்.
Thodalai kurunthodi thandhaal madalodu maalai uzhakkum thuyar.

சிறிய மாலைகள் போன்ற வளையல்களை உடைய அவள், எனக்கு மாலையில் பிரிவுத் துயரையும், மடல் ஏறும் எண்ணத்தையும் தந்து விட்டாள்.
She who has small garland like bracelets, has given me the palm-horse and pangs of seperation.

1136. மடலூர்தல் யாமத்தும் உள்ளுவேன் மன்ற
படல்ஒல்லா பேதைக்கென் கண்.
Madaloordhal yaamathum ulluven mandra padalollaa pedhaikken kan.

பேதையாகிய என் தலைவியைப் பிரிந்ததால் இரவு முழுவதும் நான் கண்ணயர்வதில்லை - அதனால் நள்ளிரவிலும் நான் மடலேறும் எண்ணம் கொள்வது உறுதி.
I cannot close my eyes to sleep even in the middle of the night, for the thoughts of that simple maiden makes me want to ride the palmyra horse.

1137. கடலன்ன காமம் உழந்தும் மடலேறாப்
பெண்ணின் பெருந்தக்க தில்.
Kadalanna kaamam uzhandhum madaleraa
pennin perunthakka dhil.

கடல் போன்ற ஆசைகளை உள்ளத்தில் வைத்திருந்தும் அவற்றை வெளிக்காட்டி மடல் ஏறாது, பொறுத்துக் கொண்டு இருக்கும் பெண்ணுக்கு நிகர் வேறு எதுவும் இல்லை.
Nothing is greater than a woman's self restraint, who does not proclaim and ride the palm-stalk, even though the passion within her is as deep as an ocean.

1138. நிறையரியர் மன்அளியர் என்னாது காமம்
மறையிறந்து மன்று படும்.
Nirai ariyar mann aliyar ennaadhu kaamam
marairandhu mandru padum.

பாவம், இவர் மனதில் உள்ளதை ஒளிக்கத் தெரியாதவர், என்று எண்ணி இரக்கம் கொள்ளாது, பெண்ணின் காதலானது ஊர் அறிய வெளிப்பட்டு விடும்.
Passion considers neither a woman's chastity nor delicacy; and betrays her secret by making itself appear in public !

1139. அறிகிலார் எல்லாரும் என்றேஎன் காமம்
மறுகின் மறுகும் மருண்டு.
Arikilaar ellarum endre en kaamam
marugin marugum marundu.

மனக் குழப்பம் உள்ள இந்த காதலானது, எனக்கு மட்டுமே தெரியும் என நினைத்துக் கொண்டு, தெருவில் சுற்றுகிறது.
My love is confused and roams the streets, thinking that no one but me knows about it.

1140. யாம்கண்ணின் காண நகுப அறிவில்லார்
யாம்பட்ட தாம்படா ஆறு.
Yaam kannin kaana naguba arivillaar yaam patta thaampadaa aaru.

காதலின் துன்பத்தை அனுபவித்து அறியாதோர், அந்தத் துன்பத்தினால் வாடும் என்னைக் கண்டு நகைப்பார்கள்.
Fools laugh at me before my very eyes,
for they have not suffered the pangs that i have.
