" I've Never Seen a Smiling Face that was not Beautiful "
How much this means to me. Having had my own practice in Bangalore, I have always found all of the patients walkin into my clinic beautiful even behind the pain ! All of them walked in with a concern about their Oral Health even if it was forced by their body. I am here to share my experiences from the time I was allowed to treat patients towards a successful career.. All of us gain information from others' experiences is what I feel. Every new day was a new experience to me and I was getting abundance in knowledge with every passing day ! I quote a saying here by Alfred Shenwold
"Learn all you can from the mistake of others. You won't have time to make them all yourself !!"
My blog space would be more interactive like the kind of person I am ! Let me read all that you wanted to know about Dental / Oral Health !

I usually am too catious when it comes to vehicles. I always have felt a danger from them. As famously said
' The chief danger in life is that you may take too many precautions.'
I had just looked back and started to walk and there came a bike and hit me from I dont know where !
I hit my head and face hard on the ground. Closing my eyes wondering wether I head ontoheaven
or hell !! Was it disturbing when I saw the sky and thought I must surely be in hell as I was convinced since I was a kid that the sky is ' Actual Heaven ' !! I saw my mom next to me and was sure the place she is must be heaven !!
But bang.. I was in a hospital and found myself gazing at the window ! I felt empty in my mouth. I
had lost four of my front teeth !!! God ! what have you done to a Dentist I thought ! I could have been hurt any kind except this I said loud ! How can I go back to my patients with artificial teeth ?? How can i set an example of healthy teeth from now on ?? I
was devastated !!
Thought of ending my life when the nurse shouted my name ! I thought she must be nuts and turned around to see my mom asking me wether I decided to sleep the whole day like this !!!
Man , that was the worst dream I had I thought. Nightmares I have heard but this was superlatively worse !! I asked Mommy do the dreams we have in the day come true ?? She said " Dreams dont come true ! Else they wont be called so " Now go treat some people with pain " !!
Darn ! Dreams dont come true I jumped with joy
Was wondering what happens to those people who
lose teeth in accidents . Must be real sad. I drove to my clinic and was a lil over cautious on the road .( The real me !! )
I got a call from my junior worried " Ma'am how long would you take to reach here ?? " I said in 2 mins and drove like Schumacher ! I was there in 30 secs !!
Driving in Bangalore is not easy.. believe me! But my junior's worried voice kept lamenting ! I took the stairs fast as I could and what do i see !! Blood all over the waiting area !!
I wasnt too shocked.. Blood is something we doctors see everyday but.. this kind.. I rushed in jus with a quick prayer to God and found this man bleeding like hell !
He met with an accident , Ma'am ,
my junior said quickly ! I was too confused and shocked as my dream reeled thru' my mind. I rushed near him with gloves and apron and found he had all his front teeth lost. I said do you have them or did you lose. He said with a smile behind the pain.. I collected and got them, Doctor ! I said very good.. The teeth even if it is avulsed ( totally out from the socket ) can be fixed back into our mouth within 1/2 - 45 mins after mishap. Just that if it is a road accident it should not have been rubbed onto the mud or dust. Our tooth ie., the root surface is attached to the bone by means a fibre like strings . These are called Periodontal Fibres .
(Perio - around. Dontal - tooth. ) As far as one does not rub the surface of the tooth it is alright. Coz the fibres have an ability to regenerate once it is back to the socket. If the mishap happens indoors then the tooth can be quickly put into milk or even saliva
and and rush as fast as you can to the dentist !
I cleaned and nursed his wound while my junior just put the tooth in solution to remove the dust. We put the teeth back after removing a lil of the biting portion and wired them around.Splinted (attached ) the teeth together so that it doesnt move when the bone formation happens in time . He had to be on fluid diet for some days because even if the front teeth a'int used in chewing it may touch each other when the back teeth grinds. This is also why I
removed a lil of biting portion to relieve the bite ( as we dentists call it ) . Put few stiches on his lower lip as it was cut. Checked his pulse and asked him if he had been hurt anywhere else. He said he hit his face only right on the ground and nothing else. I
cleaned the bruises on his palm and hands. Gave him a tetanus as he had not taken for more than 5 years.
WHO (World Health Organisation ) claims that one shot of Tetanus gives you a protection for 5 years is what a doctor had told me. I havent confirmed it yet. But six months protection between two shots I have read in a journal . I got him something to drink and
checked his pulse again. Told him to visit the hospital however. He smiled.. I just got the best treatment and care I had to.., Madam ! I still insisted.. Taking down a few instructions from my junior and a prescription from us he left. The teeth
however would go for a Root canal as it is dead. The only advantage here is you have got back your natural teeth and just need to go for Root Canal Treatment and crowns for them. Had he lost them.. the bone had to redesign in that area and he had to go for an aritficial teeth with the help of two healthy teeth next to the empty space or for implants individually which is very very expensive in a country like India with no Dental Insurance yet. In his case it was more cosmetic too. He came back religiously later for his treament and flashes a dazzling smile now !!
Thank You, God.. atleast I could help him get his lovely smile back !!

Dear Drpreethis

I read the whole post in one go. When I read the first part about you losing your teeth in an accident, I was thinking "Oh No". Thank God it was a just a bad dream or premonition of the patient's accident.
I was told that the Tetanus shot lasts for 10years. Is it different now?

Love

Dear Sundarusha ,

I am not too sure of the 10 year protection from Tetanus ! WHO comes out with so many of them that you need to keep track every day !!! :) I still get goose bumps when i think of that dream !! Thanx for reading thru and dropping your comment !!

Drpreethis....OMG ...thankfully it was a dream...
But so what if a dentist had artificial teeth...atleast it will not be too obviously recognised....haven't we seen eye specialist doctors wearing high powered lens :):)
So good to hear about you and everyone in your profession bringing back that beautiful smile on faces...in all ways possible....Thanx for that mention of the actual tooth being put in place with some surgery..I was ignorant of that so far...And yes...I guess..it is adviced not delay in replacing a tooth lost within 6 months....is it true?
good to have a dentist with us....

Thanx Saraswathi..
It is like this..however good and natural the artificial teeth is made to look like, a dentist will know it is artificial in a fraction of second !!
Maybe because we do it day in and day out !
A patient will not get his teeth extracted from me if it could be saved even if I am held at gunpoint !! I am such an adamant dentist so losing teeth is like one of the biggest losses for me !! :)
What you said is true.. There wont be an empty space for more than 6 months in our mouth !! Our tooth gives us an option you fill it or I shall and drifts to the empty space !!

Dear Chitra ,

Oh Thanx a ton for having said all that about me ! Friendliness is one of the few best compliments I have always got to hear from my patients ! I kind of believe that to understand a patient we need to become one each time.. and I never fail to flash my best smiles when they leave. :) Because of ravishing parents I have a very lovely smile and giving one alike to others.. has always been my dream !! Thank you once again !!

Dear Anupama,

Am glad you like my blog... and all the more glad you thanked God that I didnt lose my teeth !! Lovely !!!

Muzna,
I love single sentences which imply what you have in mind. Instead of talking a dictionary if we can just say what we want in one sentence .. That is Neat, right ? Am glad you liked the title of my blog.. Good to know you have many dentist relatives.. Yes it is amazing that our periodontal fibers regenerate to get hold of our tooth back !! God is one superbb brain is'nt ?

Thanx for all your encouraging words.. I shall come back soon with more knowledge to share !!!

Great Blog, Preethi!

Dear Preethi,
It was your poetic title that dragged me all the way to your blog-home. And the trip was surely worth the while.

You should be a caring person and a great doctor. I love the way you described your nightmare and the way you comforted the patient. Hardly 5% of the doctors are like you, Preethi.

Incidentally my daugther's name is also Preethi and since I am sridhar, she's S.Preethi too.

Wonderful writing and way to go, Preethi.
With lots of love and affection,

Dear Preethi,
My IL name Varalotti is the first part of my full pen name Varalotti Rengasamy. Varalotti is the name of my native village and Rengasamy is my father's name. All the 200 odd short stories and the 7 books I have published so far came only in that name.
thanks for saying that sridhar is a fab name. Ya, it's a fab name but way too common. Just have a look at the Chennai BSNL Telephone Directory. Entries on the name sridhar would run in to some 50 pages. My full name R.Sridharan is there in full two pages.
We chose the name preethi for our daughter because it means in sanskrit, one who is very pleasing.
Let me just return what you have said - you should be as pleasing as my daughter, because of the name, Preethi.
regards,

Oh Oh !! 200 short stories .. 7 Bookss !!! You are not common unlike your name... I am not into much of reading .. but I could talk 24/7 !!
Words of appreciation coming from legends like you .. I am touched.. My parents did not name me because of the meaning .. It only had to gel with my older sister, Priya' s name.. I hope as I grew they were glad they named me right !!! Being a Sanskrit student I have read that Preethi also means " Love " . It was nice exchanging few words with you..
