Bharatnatyam for Grace!!!

Posted 22nd February 2008 at 08:17 AM by Devika Menon
Dance is considered as a very good form of stress reliver but that wasnt in mind when I was hunting for a good dance teacher for my five year old daughter.
Out of every ten graceful women that I meet nine of them attribute their grace and feminity to Bharatnatyam . At the risk of sounding immodest, should be able to say the same for me . Though its been years since I learnt dance ,Bharatnatyam ,i guess the grace carries with you throughout . Bharatnatyam gives a lot of grace and even you can attribute expressive eyes to it.
It controls the way you walk , the way you move you hands and also your expressions. Brings in a lot of feminity to you. a la Hema Malini,Vyjanthimala .I guess its a excellent way to groom oneself .And it looks amazingly good even when men perform it a la Malayalam actor ,Vineet.
Grace,Feminism,Grooming,Expressive eyes coupled with innocence were some of the lessons i was looking for Neiv and what better than Bharatnatyam.
I personally prefer Bharatnatyam to other Western forms of dance ,since there is a lot of innocence involved in the dance and the dress is something that is so stunningly beautiful that the moment we enrol our kids for dance we wait to see them perform their Arangetam with the beautiful attire on.

God Bless,

Devika

Devika,
it is true that whoever learnt or learning Bharathanatyam, we can identify with their posture while sitting or standing, while talking, their eyes talk too, expressions...and even their make-up shows it all.

Ha ha Devika.....i vote 100 percent to this blog( what else will i do, since i am myself a bharatnatyam dancer from the age of 5....that was 40 years ago...and now a dance teacher! )

True that i am imparting all this to even the german students, who are so stiff and not flexible, either in their posture or figure or THougts! But have been trying from past 6 , 7 years and have seen some improvement.....And am happy and contented at what i am doing here!

But it does feel good to read your ideas on this and am i glad that you have decided to enroll your daughter in this wonderful art form.

All the very best to her......hope she finds all the Grace and Divinity this great art form imparts!

hi chechi,
saw this just now....and was i thrilled....grt to know that u know bharatnatyam...i love any dance form and bharatnatyam especially is close to my heart...learnt the basics for a few years at school, but could'nt continue for many reasons...my parents and i,all three of us love this beautiful dance form...spent all my childhood decembers in chennai sabha hopping, enjoying the music and dance....as u say, bharatnatyam dancers stand out by the way they carry themselves...even so many male dancers have that grace....many of the well known dance gurus in chennai are male....
i have regretted so many days no tbeing able to pursue it, and a couple of months back, when i received my cousin's arangetram invite, i was so happy for her that i wept....
wishing dear Niev all the very best....
