Finest Blog of October 2009 - Runner Up - Comment by Amihere to this blog is the Runner-up of this contest.
Children should be encouraged to read fiction as well as informative & instructive books like books based on life sciences, abridged autobiographies biographies &classics, folk tales, poems etc.Reading of different forms of literature will enhance his mental horizon & he would gain a lot of extra knoweldge & information which would certainly add an extra edge to his over all personality in todays world of cut throat competition.
Through reading habit a child gains mastery over the language & his vocabulalary is enhanced to a great extent & thus he is able to express his thoughts and ideas in most impressive manner in his answers which enhances the quality of his answers to a great extent & thus reading habit affects his school result in a positive way.
Reading habit increases his power of imagination too as he goes through different sets of fictitious circumstances & situations.
This also enables him to resolve real life challenging situations in life successfully.
Most forms of healthy literature convey some moral values & thus the child imbibes moral values in his early childhood & thus a foundation of strong value system is laid in the child in his early childhood itself.
Strong command on language enables a child to communicate most effectively with others & u would agree that impressive communication power is greatly useful in adding an attractive dimension to one's personality.
If your child develops passion for books in his childhood he would devote his free time in reading instead of watching the idiot box,gossipping..,outing with friends ,wasting time on social sites or other unwanted activities.

If u dont agree with me on these points, kindly express your views freely & let me know through your comments.I WOULD LOOK FORWARD TO THEM.

I don’t disagree with you of what you said about reading. But I am not sure whether a child will take up reading just because we urge him to do so stating all the positive things s/he will develop from it. The best way to develop the habit is to lead by example. I am an avid reader and I proudly say everyone that I got the habit from my dad. I never remember anyone saying me to read books. But I remember seeing my dad most of the free times with a book in his hand, reading it carefully. He sometimes forewords us quotes from the book he is reading, he gifts us book for special occasions (an indirect way of asking to read ). He has a good collection of books, most of them non-fictions, and thus did we (Siblings & me) love to spend our time with books.
But I do disagree with you in a few views…” instead of watching the idiot box, gossipping.., outing with friends ,wasting time on social sites” I don’t think all these are unnecessary. T.V is no long an idiot box now, it imparts them good knowledge if the channels they watch are good one’s like NatGeo, Animal World,BBC also some other programs in other few channels. Outing with friends also is a necessary thing in limits. If a child spends his entire time indoors with books, he is going to grow up a book worm.An active well networking child is always preferred to a bookworm. Also the social networking sites also is becoming kind of a necessary evil.It helps them to keep track of old friends. Only thing is that all these should be in limits, anything in excess is bad.Posted 14th September 2009 at 01:16 AM by amihere

i would say the habit of reading almost vanished in this generation of children..i wonder how they will develop interest with their text books if this present situation continues..
Believe it or not there are people who order books just to fill their own library for "show off"..
yes..our parents cultivated a very good habit of reading...though they never actually asked us to read..we simply learnt from them...they acted as a stimulant for us...now..we must ask ourselves the same question...
reading habit makes a child to imagine a thing beyond any limits..that develops his or her creativity and it surely will help in all ways...Posted 14th September 2009 at 03:39 AM by kri

Aha,
That is a topic very close to my heart.
I started reading ight from a young age because my mother,a major factor in my life encouraged me to read.
Fortunately I married a man who is also fond of reading Naturally we encouraged our daughters to read.A big amount was allocated for buying magazines for my kids. They are voracious readers and they are articulate ,write very well.
What are the advantages in encouraging this reading habit in children?Boredom never visits them.Their intellectal horizon widens, they grow up as matured individuals.Boredom does not exist in my day to day life.
Good writers influence your thinking .Good books are your best friends, they don't sit in judgment on you.
As far as TV is considered I would not call it an idiot box. There are so many wonderful programmes that are telecast.Whatever is happening in any corner of the world is brought to you in a matter of minutes, chilren benefit a lot by watching useful programmes.I would not call serials as rubbish, not at all.We do need rlaxation.
