Touch me not!

Endearments Enliven and Enrich Everyday life !

I am now a resident of Chennai, previously called Madras for the past forty plus years.
I feel like crying out

"Madras, you have come a long way, in becoming Chennai !"

In my younger days in Madras, the vegetable selling was generally done by vendors, who would come home in the mornings. We used to buy fresh vegetables everyday and do the cooking. There was a standard “Keeraikari” for every street – you could buy any variety of keerai for your asking !...

As Deepavali approaches, I tend to become nostalgic about the sweets and savouries made, when we were young.

Those were the days of Mysorepak (note, not Mysorepa), Coconut burfi, Boondi laddu, wheat halwa, Somasi – well, the list is not long. We had not even heard of badushah in the 50’s. Jangiri was generally shop bought. Gulabjamun was scarce. My Appa’s North Indian friend used to send the same, but the shape was then oval and it used to look like a mini-sausage! Last August, I got a severe ham-string muscle pull. I was dismayed when it almost immobilized me, to start with. Then followed a visit to the doctor followed by x-rays, physiotherapy etc. Less activity resulted in more weight- not that I was ever light on my feet !
The inevitable reduction in weight was compulsorily prescribed. I tried to follow the G M diet, prescribed in our forum. I lost just a meager 1.5 kgs. Well, I ultimately consulted a dietician, with more apprehension and less hope....
