How I wish I were a go getter !

I have a friend, who, I always think, is a perfect example of the term "go getter". She is so enterprising and rightly acts and gets things done, without beating around the bush.
No doubt, her work gets rapidly done whether all others will be thinking twice or thrice, whether and if so, how to move ahead !

Let me tell you, she is not well-educated academically at all; but the confidence oozing out of her will put us (the formally educated) to shame. She will "wriggle" out her way into any crowd and get things done, before others start planning how to go about.
She is just spontaneous and acts so fast - one of the most active of my friends. She is so energetic and does not bother what others will think of her. It is just straight action for her !

She loves life and invents solutions to seemingly tough problems. Not only that, she is just not bothered what people talk about her. For her, it is action first and result next !
There is not much of gap between the two!

She is both flexible and tough, both contrasting qualities, as the occasion demands. She just does not believe in standing on formalities. Rules and regulations stifle her, no extent! She does not plan much but is confident that she can handle whatever comes her way. But, she is very well aware of her modest limitations and will venture only where she is sure to succeed!

Her attitude is always positive, which, I think is a great gift in life. She refuses to think that things can go wrong; I think she will not allow to! She is an extrovert and mingles effortlessly in a crowd, liberally sprinkled with academicians and intellectuals. Infact, her husband is a great intellectual and one of the smartest men, I have come across. But, I would say, my friend is "street smart"!

She is ever alert and will never allow an opportunity to her advantage, to slip. Her determination always amazes me. She assesses the situation so fast and comes out with the most practical solution. Her attitude, never to bother "what will others think of me?, is what I like most about her ! I waste more time on such thinking ! How I wish, I were like her, to a small extent, atleast ! I am totally a "what will others think, if....." type !

She is very well aware of the "stuff she is made of" and admits she is a "Padikkatha Methai" – an intellectual without a formal education, comparable only to our leader Kamaraj. I think she is exactly that !!

Love,
Chithra.

Believe me, Kalpana, I am just like you ! Inspite of my best efforts, I fail to project myself even to the rightful extent, leave alone forging ahead ! I do not know if I lack confdence in myself.
I admire her for her "guts" & hence chose her as a topic.
Thanks for such a quick FB, Kalpana.
Love,
Chithra.

You left out....

one point in your list, AC. That is "circumstances". If she knows that something will not work out, she will "not touch it with a bargepole"!
Yes, I hope atleast a trace of her confidence will rub on me, but, no luck, so far ! I am the same old person lacking S C !
Thanks for joining me so quick !

Dear Chith

You can include me too in the category of What others will think. So I like your friend's personality very much. The speed in which they get the things done is amazing.

Dear Chithu,
I have seen so many of them who can confidently without batting an eyelid ask for and get things done at the right moment.I lack self confidence and before I can open up and ask for something it is too late, what to do Iam made that way. Was waiting to see your monday musings, enjoyed every line. Hurray to the SC ones and Alas!! to all of us. Love your avatar.

Et tu, Janani ??!!

You are a career woman unlike me. Then why do you lack SC like me?
As I am replying you, I can think of another go getter in my own family ! None other than Chitru - my own DIL !
I wonder if she will read this - will there be pleasantries or fireworks? Oh, I did'nt think of her before posting this, my God !
I am suddenly anxious !!
My avatar is representative of my nativity ! Though I am distinctively a Mylaporean, I love to call myself a Maduraite !

Dear Chithu,
I meant the go getter attitude where you have to step on someone else's shoes to go up the ladder.I do not have that kind of 'push' in me. I rather get appreciated for what I do. It is like that all around, they will not think before they stab you to get ahead. I think work will speak for you rather than that kind of attitude.

Hello Chithra
I have one friend the way you have mentioned, I have met her here and I know her from just 2 months. She is an Indian. This lady is full of energy, ready to do what ever she wants, She has just come to Egypt. Even though she doesn't know the language, she makes these people understand and gets the work done. I have come here much much before her and I always hesitate to go forward and ask for anything. Only after I know her started going out a little bit but see to that she too is there with me. I use to always go on my own everywhere but here I don't know have lost confidence in me, but slowly regaining it with the help of this lady. Thanks Anu(her name) for being a friend of mine. Hope she reads it.

So, we both have similar friends, Aruna?
Yes, we do need to be like that for our own benfit ! But, it is innate, I think & cannot be cultivated ! Go getter sounds a "nicer" word than street-smart, agree?

Hi C,

there is a saying in telugu which i heard a lot during growing up (early child hood). Adaganidi amma ayina pettadu translates something like .... With out asking even one's own mother will not give. this has helped me a lot later in life during college, marraige, career, volunteering and in child rearing. There is no aspect in life where this has not helped me. So may be i fall in the minority here? (see here too i am saying what type i am other wise how will you know? )

Dear Chithra,
How I wish that I belong to the minority community! I am an introvert and always will think about deciding on something," What will others think?" But my younger sister is just opposite to me. She is quite bold and will take decisions faster. hm.........both of us came out of the same womb! What a contrast!

Dear Blondie,
In tamil we have a corresponding saying
Azutha piLLaikku paal !
It is very true - in this world of stiff competition, one has to look after one's own progress, rightly. You have cultivated it over the years - but the basic streak, call it the correct amount of confidence must have been innate in you !
Thaanks, for joining me here.

PS, yet one more to join me?

The word "thayakkam" in tamil, is the most apt word for us, agree?
But we stand to lose very often with that quality present in us !
Thanks, P.

Way to go, Shanvy. What you say is very true. But the basic spark for forging ahead, ofcourse without disturbing or hurting others, has to be in you.You said it right that children must be encouraged to go ahead withouthesitation, if they feel justified !

Dear Chitra Mam(i),
Let me join Shanvy and Blondie in saying that I belong to their group too. My father always says, Vayulla Pillai Pizhaikum and I have always followed his advice to the core. Infact I am regarded as the PR for the entire family, both my side and my DH's side and one stop resource person too for I get the details or get anything they are in need of.

And I can see that quality is inborn in my son though my daughter has slight hesitations but she is learning to overcome that too. Hope she learns it well.
