Rowling to Blyton
Posted 1st April 2008 at 06:02 AM by Anandchitra
The first Harry Potter book came out and I still remember there was not that much hue and cry over the book as there is now. I was easily able to borrow a book from the library and readit. The biggest impact that book had on me was it took me to the world of my beloved Enid Blyton. If I had read my subject book with as much or even lesser enthusiasm as I read Enid Blyton I would now be a Ph.D in every subject. Reading Enid Blyton was to be in a world of your own. Totally transported either to Fatty's world or George's tantrums or Anne's softways or to the rugatub mystery and the list is ofcourse endless. Even with something like BrerRabbit she captured the hearts and souls of each child. Not the least would be the fairies and other creatures living under a toadstool. To this day i look under a mushroom to make sure no hidden friend exists. What is even more surprising is the fact that these books could be read at any point in your life and still feel the magic she weaved.
Well the first book of Harry Potter did create the special magic. I was transported to the world of make believe(?) or do spirits do exist?! It was truly incredible how Rowling captures the hearts of todays kids.
Many kids I knew who did not touch a book took to reading after only a book or two from Rowling. To her society owes a huge debt. For if a child does not acquire the love of reading all could be lost... The books in the series did not do much for me except the last book. Ofcourse I paid my due share by waiting with a very eager kid up until midnight.I also waited for ds to fall asleep so I could steal and read. I did try and annoy my ds by reading the reverse pages.. Also had quite a few fights on sharing the book.. Its all worth it in the name of books. The Harry Potter movies added to the magic and helped enhance the experience more. Still I would any day be rather found with a Enid Blyton book. Over the years I have still managed to retain quite a few of my old collection and once in a while my dh and I remind ourselves of those days when we ran to get new books from the library after begging from our parents the rentals fee of 10 paise or 20 paise!!!!. Forget about owning one let alone a collector edition. It does make our thoughts more special to know as kids we did meet in the land of make believe though far far away.

| | AC, My most favorite author. Even now I love reading Blyton. Just got done reading famous five and secret seven with Anirudh. I think her Magic Faraway Tree series was the best. Oh and who can forget St Claires and Malory Towers. I used to love the roly poly French teacher. Oh i am probably one of the few moms who is not affected by the " Potter " syndrome. Not too crazy about the books. But agree with you, Rowling has done great service in getting the kids to read again. nice topic . keep blogging |

| | Dear AC You made my nostalgic.. talking about Enid blyton series. I was tempted to take a peek in the closest library and wouldn't mind reading them all over again. I always loved the friendly & helpful fairies, elves, gnomes, golliwogs featured in her books. I have forgotten most of the stories now.. some evergreen hilarious memories are: The boy who refused to clean behind his ears had tomato plants growing from there A boy biting nails heard them squeaking all the time in school even if accidently bit them.. (courtesy:fairies trying to discipline them!) EB had unmatched fertile imagination Regards Honeybee |

| | Dear Anandchitra There is no match for the Blyton books I still read them and just love to. And Harry potter I have read all the books as I am 1st crazy to read those books what will I tell about my kid. We use to fight to finish the book. Who will finish 1st............Hahaha I know this sounds crazy.......As Harry Potter books have made not only the kids even some elders and I am one of them. Not enough just reading the books I have even watched all the movies. I think different books have they own way which we can cherish them. Blyton has its own way, potter has its own way. Other then these I love to read nancy drew, Hardy boys, Mills and boons, Amar chitra katha etc etc......just a few yrs back I donated some of the books to the libary but still have a lot of collection of these books........... Yes now these have become less and have started reading some fictions, suspense and mystery stories. |

| | Dear AC, I am also crazy of Enidblyton. But when it comes to Harry Potter, I dont have competition from my daughter or son, but I had competition from my co-sisters. When the first book came, it was way back, and my SIL's eldest daughter who was 9 years old by then, was very keen on reading the book, without keeping it down. She reminded me of my ownself, when I was young. And my SIL's husband, was teasing her about platform 9 3/4th. (we all were going to Ooty from Chennai). Yes Aruna, I too love reading Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, AmarChitraKatha, but I have never taken a liking for Mills and Boons. Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys, I still read them as I find, many books in the series, I have not read. |

| | Dear most Chithu sis, Believe me when I tell I wanted to write a blog similar to this topic.?? I was really wondering how the "fiction" and "magic" mania can be compared and J K Rowling and Enid Blyton were the first two to strike my chords through reflex action!! Oh, great coincidence indeed. But am extremely sorry that I could not leave my feedback then (the blame merely is that I saw the blog just now..the sheer ignorance i portray always). Am an ardent (the word to the power INFINITY) fan of Harry Potter and frankly speaking, I lived my Life through the Magical corridors of Hogwards Witchcraft and Wizardry. Such a wonderful writer Rowling is !! She captured not only the kid's mind but also the elder (older ?) generation's interests !! When the "Order of Phoenix" was first published and released in UK and the US, believe me, I registered my name in the near by library before "six" months of its print !! Absolutely no jokes... Might seem foolish, but it did do wonders in the kids community (Oh, I now take pleasure in aligning my name with the kids ha ha ha ha.. of course I am no doubt !!) I usually complete any series of Harry's within a day or two !! When I used to go for my IIT coaching classes, my only past time (present, future ??? ha ha ha) was Rowling within my reach. I never bothered whether I got a place to sit or not in the bus journey :) Enid Blyton again bowled me off with her stunning Famous five and Mysterious Secret Seven !! A brilliant writer again !! Left to myself I try to keep myself busy reading any kind of a treasure. But I should frankly agree that college days have made me lazy enough that I keep books for long and read very very slowly. Now clenching on to"Paulo Coelho's" "Witch of Portobello" !! Just have completed 20 pages. And another parallel one that I read online. "How to keep your brain alive". Ha ha ha two extremes !! Yes, thats how my collections are. My mom at time says I have gone mad !!! :):) Sorry Chithu ji for making my feedback a lengthy one that that of your leader blog; but could not control myself, since a wonderful topic dear to my heart :):) Loads of Love RamyaVaradharajan |

| | Dear Anandchitra, During schooldays , I was all into Nancy Drew while my bro was into Hardy Boys. And of course Archies. Betty and Veronica was a very integral part of my life and I was very fond of jughead. It was also a very healthy habit then reading various books for entertainment .Till the eighties I think this was the only available entertainment for children , Now of course everything is available on TV so to a great extent this wonderful habit seems to have gone for a toss. Very Nice thread AC . Lovely it! Love, Devika |
