Phelp's mistake or not?

Everyone who watched this great athlete Michael Phelps win the Olympic Gold medals held him in awe. The television stations then transmitted his rigorous practice schedule and his hours of swimming day after day after day.
So the news that he smoked marijuana in a party , hit the headlines and everyone wanted to comment on his actions.
This incident recalls to mind the many public figures who face reprimands for their actions in the public eye. It seems to be the price to pay for their fame and fortune.
Much of the opinion was about Phelps being a role model.
It is my opinion that Phelps being a great athlete cannot be held as a role model for young boys and girls. However what can be held as a role model should be his discipline in practice and his hard work.
I really do not understand what the furor is all about. To me, he is an adult and is doing what many Americans do as a pastime. I do not condone the use of drugs and nor am I going to abuse it. In this instance, there is no doubt that it was Phelps right to choose really.
The only thought I had in mind was that he made a mistake in being photographed. If he had exercised discretion he would not have been recorded with his actions and would have been forgotten after the party.
That brings to mind many other famous personalities who during their time had been caught and then suffered the consequences.
So is it acceptable for an athlete to engage in drugs or other activities as long as they do not get caught engaged in it?
Is that the solution then to see that you do not get photographed abusing drug or engaged in any illegal activity.? Or should they behave like us normal people and never be in a position to abuse drugs and such?
Considering the circumstances of their lives and the party circles they live in , will this not be too much to ask?
Do share your views so we can engage in a debate as to what Phelp’s mistake was? The use of drugs or being caught using drugs?

Go AC go....
exactly my sentiments ...
poor fellow was only doing what an average american his age was doing(that nobody should do drugs is a totally different matter)...It should in no way be connected to phelps the world famous athlete but to phelps the person...
but the problem is celebrities have only one status they loose out on so many things the ordinary ones their age do...yes thats the price of success so he should see to it that he does not get caught by the press the next time
and no worries , he will..this was only his first time,no?

Good Questions AC...!
I think his mistake was to be caught by the paparazzi.
The price to pay ...for being a celebrity I guess, however, no doubt in his athletic abilities. I felt sad to see him this time in front of the cameras apologizing to the public.
The sponsors became the main stakeholders....
Kellogs' has announced that they will not renew his endorsement contract. On the lighter vein, I laughed at the news: people who oppose marijuana restrictions, have started boycotting Kellogs products.
Omega, Subway, Speedo etc have accepted his apologies...and I also read somewhere that he wore an Omega watch in the Bong photo.(So much for being a brand ambassador lol!)
And for Mindi, this is the second time he was caught...the first one for a drink driving stint back in 2004 at the age of 19, and then too was caught by a photo. (He should learn his lesson atleast this time to go in disguise, when he wants to do crazy things bonk.) My view on this is : Grow up Boy! And please media... give the kid a break!Posted 10th February 2009 at 01:04 AM by AbhiSing

Hi AC;
I think the issue here is that consumption of marijuana or any narcotic is illegal.So he did an illegal act.America cant let him scotfree just becoz the country has a free sex & drugs image.Image & law are two different matters.kellogs cant have him as a role model as kellogs represents health & his act was unhealthy.You cant have O J simpson as a role model no matter how good a football player he was.Infact by making his incident public the american media & law enforcers are sending a message law is equal to all,Phelps or not.
I do agree what Phelps did was to his own health but was technically against the law.
Love;

Dear AC,
A good one asusual from you !
Reading this I am reminded about Clinton's affair which was rocking US. I was wondering as this is common in US and why make a furore over it. Then my Dad explained that he being the President, people want an untarnished Prez as the ruler hence all this hungama.
Maybe as you say the price they pay for being popular.Posted 10th February 2009 at 04:11 AM by Lalitha Shivaguru
