நிலா நிலா ஓடீ வா
மலை மேல ஏறி வா
மல்லிகை பூ கொண்டுவா

Nila means moon. so the poem reads like
Moon Moon come running
climb over the mountains to come
bring jasmine flowers when you come.
The moon is like a savior of sorts for young mothers.
Many mothers who feed their small children their dinner, rely on the friendly moon to distract the child and to make the child eat yet another morsel.
The moon is conveniently visible all over the globe and sometimes it splendor and attraction is enough to captivate the mind of a small child.
The child looks up at this far away object that its mother points out so endearingly. The Moon eager to have children look up at it, is in full splendor and an adorned beauty of the night sky.
The moon was thankfully my savior too. Most nights when child was small we used to gaze at the moon together to eat just a little bit more.
Then there were the days when the moon waned and there was no moon for a few days. Those are difficult days to explain to child where it went. Of course in the mind of an innocent child the Moon is playing hide and seek.

What can be enchanting than the Moon peering through the trees and its light falling through the windows and splattered across the roofs.? Don't you agree?

| | Dear AC, OMG! Believe me! Today morning, I was singing the same song in Telugu. "Chanda mama raave, jaabilli raave, Konda ekki raave, koti poovu thevae". And now, I am reading your blog about our Chandamama. What a telepathy! AC, you brought back my sweet memories! Nila was my saviour too! It was so difficult for me to feed my older one when she was a toddler. If I show her Nila, she used to ask many questions. I used to tell that I would tell only if she eats the food. Then, she will gulp the food and will ask again (eppo sollu). Nice blog! Enjoyed reading! Sindhu |

| | dear AC when i saw nila nila , i thought it was something to do with blue, ( now i know its moon)but coz it was written twice i was curious to find why the rythem. it never entered my head that it could be some thing else ![]() but as ususal my curiosity was well awrded, a person who can communicate about the mundane of life and make them look like special treats, has to be special as it is a special talent. it seems i have been very pragmatic with my kids, no nila nila for them. seen it in movies, but your words put life to the thing.the whole act seemed so endearing.the younger one is just an year old so i think its quite an idea, i'll try with him....thnx for the idea the selection of ur pics add a poignancy to the write up |

| | Dearest AC, A simple and nice blog dear. Even the ordinary things, you can only make it interesting. My two dds were brought up seeing the nila only and singing the same song. Even today we feel drawn towards nila. On a full moon night, we will surely gaze at him. My younger one's star is Rohini. She has heard that Moon had 27 wives and rohini was his favourite. So she is too proud to be loved by nila. ha ha |

| | thats why I was angryDear AC, My mother used to show me the moon and tell lovely stories. One day the moon would be Rathi's girlfriend carrying messages to manmatha, one day it would be a gold plate from which the angels were eating ,on another day the moon would be an oonjal on which the God and Goddess were sitting . I used to listen to her in rapt attention. My childhood years were filled with such stories. In teens the moon played a different role and appealed to me as something very romantic,a friend of the lovers. So when the space scientists went to the moon, put their feet on this glorious mystery, and declared to the whole world that it was another planet,my dear friend my heart broke.I do not want the moon to lose its mystery, the fragrance it gives to the lives of the writers, the poets, the lovers and more than that the mothers carrying their babies on their hips and trying to feed them. love mithila kannan |

| | Dear AC, I remembered a thenali Raman story when I went through your blog. The prince cried for the moon to be held in his hand and the king didn't know what to do. Thenali Raman came ane he asked the servants to bring a golden plate and he captured the reflection of the moon in it to pacify the child. Moon light dinner at sea shore or river side is really enjoyable and we had experienced it on Chithra Paurnami days. Your blog took me down memory lane.... Love, PS |
