Eating Out

Where and how would you like to eat when you dine out? Would you like a place where you can sit and relax and listen to good music or just sit and not relax too much or just pick up and go ? We as a family dont eat out too often and very occasionaly do the sit back and relax dining. Probably on one of our birthdays maybe. We however dine out where you can sit and eat quite comfortably but not too relaxed. By too relaxed I mean listening to music and the waiter bringing in atleast 3 courses. Its ofcouse mainly due to expense and also time is a factor.
These days eating out seems to become the norm. We appear as the odd ones out since we dont eat out frequently. Maybe can be attributed to both parents working and hence there is not much time to cook. And its also very convenient. Needless to say there are the pickup spots. Most departmental stores these days have so many lunch/dinner menu items than can be picked up on the way home so as to finish dinner easily. Less mess to clean as well.
Quality will also play a role. Do these food prepared are of good quality? Is it worth the money and the hassle of buying etc. Is it worth us going without home cooked meals? Everyone's opinion on this will be different. I can understand from the point of view of busy working mothers that its very convenient. With small children the need is higher. In my family they are very happy if they get rasam to eat. They ofcourse get the standard fare but rasam seems to be a hit. I dont what's this about the rasam, when made slightly thicker than usual they just slurp it up and empty the pot. In whichever size pot this is made they are quick to empty it. So really I have no excuse not to make this easy item. Truth betold I too enjoy this a lot. And its easy to cook a vegetable dish. If cutting is a problem theres Frozen veg. What with all the frozen items available, thats not a big deal.
Eating out ofcourse has its own charm. What are your thoughts on this? Or is eating out eating your pocket as well? Or better to eat out to keep Mom happy? Or better to eat a homecooked meal?

Hi AC,

We are a family of RasaBhattars too. I have to make rasam in a" andan" only and it will get over!! Anyway yes we eat out too. But its usually on the birthday or anniversary. And usually it will be a place where they will put up with a mess that a 4 yr old can make!!
But all said and done, its always preference to home cooked meals. Even when i was working, i did cook everyday( ofcourse with the help of the forzen cut veggies etc). When we go on long trips out of town, i always travel with my Mini kitchen , so we can have the amrutham " rasam sadam" atleast once in the night on those days!!.
Finally i would say that give moms a break and dine out now and then, but with a little help one can cook a meal in a jiffy. Just a roti and sabji or a rasam, curry plus sadam does not take more than 30 minutes to do. ( I love Rachel Ray for her tips and ideas).

You always put a smile on my face. If I am ever down I just need to rush here and read your posts. I am just laughing on seeing RasaBhattars. And I thought we were the only but could not have come up with such a cutie name. But if they are contend with this what more do we need to ask. Yes my dh and I lov RR him more than I. We lean towards Italian cuisine when we dine out and it does give us a break from our hectic taxi service. still smilin..

Dear AC,
First and foremost we both are "Rasa Moda Kudiyans" ! I can skip even making rice, but not rasam ! I love to drink a cup of rasam, not to forget pouring it hot on idlis ! Have you ever tried that? Ofcourse, rasavandi is an eternal sidedish with idli, dosai etc. I mix the same with atta, to make parathas.
oops, your topic is Eating Out - but I have shifted my focus completely ! I love it more for the ambience than for food. But believe me, V blatantly refuses & in all these years of "wedded bliss", we have never eaten out together , not once !
If at all the children take me out, I opt for Small Italy or Rajasthani Food. I love the venpongal in Saravanas or Sambaridly in Rathna Cafe ! Typical, traditionally Southie, when it comes to tastebuds !
Love,
Chithra.

The topic shifted long ago. Really did not dream there were other Rasa Bhattars or Rasa moda kudiyan. I really laughing so hard that my family has given up on saving me. I was even hesitant to admit our rasam love in public thats how crazy we are. I can never ever skip making rasam not that its difficult. Anyways coming back to topic my husband too is not a big fan of eating out. But nowadays the poor man tags along. But since he asks for such simple dishes and is really happy eating these simple items i am fine too. hmmmmmm rajasthani food sounds yummy. Venpongal in saravana and sabar idli in rathna cafe have had both and love it. For me I used to ask them to bring the sambahr idlis out hot. So let me sign off as another Rasa Moda Kudiyan. LOL.

hey ac

Let me jump in the wagon before veda gets into office...I don't like to eat in hotels...somehow eating out....a big NO for me...in that time i can make some parruppu thogaiyal, some veggies, and jeera rasam....(veda thinks it is pattiya samayal!!! but DD drinks jeera rasam....) We are again rasa priyars...(ho veda if you come in please don't mention periamma's rasam or i am going to scream !!!!!!!!!!).
On the contrary, veda is fan of hot pongal vadai and sambhar from saravana bhavan (he plans a visit to the temple regularly on fridays...there is branch in muscat near the temple) The kids love eating out....though they tell me later..mom nothing can beat your cooking....
The problem with the vanara gang of the fly (niece & nephews& dd and ds..) all of them like only paneer items...so it would be 4/5 dishes of panneer only..with some rotis/naans/.

ha Rasam! That wonderful soup.. When kids were small and I was coping with job, family, etc etc.. Rasam with papads were the standard fare for the kids. My children along with friends / relative s's children will converge in our house and I will simply make some RAsam accompanied by Ghee and papad or some such side dish . Mix it well with hot rice ( Pisaindhu) and spoon in their plates.. It used to disappear in no time. After many years when they all met ( grown up , settled in life) they tease each other about " rasam mammu"!

That made all the fond memories back. We parents were grinning and felt it was all worth while.

I would like a place where we can go and sit for hours and enjoy. Usually in private clubs one can do that!.
Are there many such places where you can eat out and relax with family or friends for a couple of hours?
Hope someone will share the information.

I am going to tell Veda he will get sambhar and pongal and vadai from our Atlanta Saravana Bhavan so he can plan your family visit soon. I am sure thats bribe enough. !!!!
You're right about the kids too. So waiting to eat your paruppu thogaiyal and jeera rasam. No better combination on Earth!!!!

AC,

We have a sarvana branch here too. And guess what we invariably end up eating if we go there" rasa vadai" !!!. Anyway, one more name for your benefit which my MIL fondly calls my kids " idli subbas". They will eat idli anytime of the day you give them.
Hey lets start a Rasam Fan club in IL now. My favorite is Jeera, and killithalichi rasam ( or killikotti as it is called sometimes with vepampoo added).

Shanti, i am there with you for the patti samaiyal. Love it. Am coming home for the jeera rasam and paruppu thogayal. with sutta appalam

Dear AC....
Shan has entered the Wagon first...Great... I love to eat outside with my family...Definitely not regularly, once in a while.... Some of the items, it is always nice at the hotels... Even though you do the same thing at home, most of the times, the taste will not be the same... My kids enjoy that.... When I see the satisfaction and happiness & enjoyment in their eyes.... there is nothing to beat it.... It is may be because, during the childhood days I never enjoyed, I want the kids to enjoy....
Yes, Shan is an excellent cook... Agreed.... But it needs to be spiced up with occassional outing.... But I cant stand to wait in the hotels to get a seat.... That is onething which I couldnt take it till date...
Rasam.... Good rasam.... (Ofcourse other than JeeraRasam).... That is good enough to tempt me to go any place.... Thanks to Chitvish Recipies.... Planning to do the Kandathippilli rasam on my own... My poor friends are the gunnie pigs... hahahaha...

Dear AC,
We are all a family of rasam lovers, Paruppu, Lemon, Mysore, Jeeraga, Pundu, Kandathipill, whatever it maybe. And we are a family who loves to eat out. But nowadays we prefer to bring food from out and eat at home. Paneer is a favourite but since I make it at home, we go for Chinese, starters or any Tandoori item. Gobi 65 from Saravana Bahvan is DH favourite, my older daughter loves french fries and Gobi Manchurian. All " nakku neelam.,whatelse?????? We love the joints with not too much lighting and instrumental music or ghazals.

Hi AC,
I too don't like eating out. But when my sons come home to stay with us they will force me to go with them. My dil will tell me to order meals from catering people. She would say, "We stay only for 15 days and the whole time you are at the kitchen and making our favourite dishes and we go bloating."
About rasam..... ethanai ethani rasam! aha! porichu rasm, lemon rasm, Mysore rasm, killi thirumaRina rasam, miLaku rasam, veppampoo rasam and goddu rasm, more rasam and many more! In our family we can forego sambar, but not rasam. My daughter carrys a miny kitchen whereever she goes because my grandson will not eat any thing other than rasm mammu! We make rasa vadai on in laws ceremoney days.

Glad to note you all enjoy eating out. The way you write it sounds like lot of fun. Eating at home takeout food will be convenient and save the hassle too. I have never made the kandathipil rasam though heard of. If you find time give some more details on that.
