Dont know what it is about this hot drink but need it first thing in the morning to kick start my engine I mean body. I sometimes think its just me. Nowadays not even particular about the type. Growing up I had milk for some years though Boost and Ovaltine and the like existed these were not bought at home. If my grandmother made me milk it was a watered version but we never knew better so that worked. Once we graduated to Coffee, I could only drink decotion coffee. During our early married days I remember going all the way to buy Narasus's coffee. My motherin law was very particular about the chicory content and percentage too. So she used to grill the person serving us the ground coffee about the chicory percentage and thats how I became familair with chicory. My grandmother never approved of putting or setting the dicoction at night itself. She used to do it first thing in the morning after waking up and taking bath. That she woke up at 4a.m ofcourse helped. At my inlaws it was set at night itself or if done in morning no need to take bath before entering kitchen. Milkman used to come only around 5.30 which annoyed my motherinlaw no end and she would argue why are you coming late everyday with him and he always would say I will come earlier "tomorrow". Meanwhile I would take the milk vessel inside and heat up and then get ready the davara tumblers. By this time the dicoction would have been poured through 1 Time, 2 Time and 3 Times. The first set is always reserved for the men and second set for women and third set for servant. If I forget the order that did not help. I did not mind as much the dicoction strength. In later days milk used to be bought and kept in fridge and then used. Nowadays we use a coffee maker and make dicoction coffee only once in a while. We seem to have changed so much that it doesnt matter as much. For me I really need that hot brew to jump start or rather get moving. Rarely do we use davara and tumbler too. And Bru or Nescafe works well for dicoction coffee too. Feel like saying suda oru cup kafee kondu vappa (bring a hot cup of coffee)and sitting and drinking decoction coffee. wonder who wants to join in for a hot cuppa??

| | Me,me,me! I will join you anytime, anywhere for a soda oru tumblar kaapi that too if it is accompanied by muru muru bajji and vengaya chutney. I am a coffee lover. Have to make mine with traditional decoction and must drink it in tumblar davara. My husband is also a coffee lover, but very different from me. He has a Gaggia, uses espresso cups, brown sugar crystals. Not having decoction coffee is one of the perils of living outside India. Recently, I discovered this instant coffee powder called Hotel Bru. Not fully decoction coffee, but quite close. Like all your blogs. Keep going! |

| | Hi AC, Another coffee lover. that too very particular about decoction coffee. Had a tough time initially when i came here. Only instant, and then the coffee maker brews were so weak!! Then i perfected my cuppa, had my ILs send over a pithalai filter. And now it is only decoction coffee made fresh daily. So you are welcome to come over anytime, for a nice hot cuppa, served in davara tumbler if you like. |

| | Waking up in the morning to read for the exam is not a great way to start.. The feeling that there is so much to complete before the clock strikes 8 and I am sooo sleepy, is not very motivating either.. "Amma, coffee ma.." I plead peeping into the kitchen.. She hands over a stainless steel tumbler with "gama gama, shuda shuda" filter coffee, beautifully adorned with the froth (norai)... Aaaaaaahaa.. Arpudham.. The first sip fully wakes me up and the pages keep rolling, be it the exam notes or The Hindu ! The rule at my home is to use the mug if I want to sip and use the tumbler if I want to drink without touching my mouth. But sipping in the tumbler is oooooooohhhhh , bliss ! ( break the rules ! ) Affly, Gayu |

| | Dear Vidya The perky manner in which you write has woken me up completly and done the rest of the work that coffee left. I will share a secret with you since your so nice and all My husband brings me bed coffee Since thats a surety nowadays I wake up and brush and stuff and wait for it. My father even said that instead of waiting you can come down and make it yourself. For him its poor mapillai. But thats where i am headed in old age. My brother also uses this Hotel Bru. He has to make coffee the elaborate way. He boils milk and then makes ot froth and then adds this Hotel Bru powder and its definetly pretty close to the original for me. Once I learn about this Gaggia from you I'll pass it on to him. BTW wish you hadnt mentioned bajji and vengaya chutney hmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!! |

| | Dear Vandhana Yyou are now the uncrowned queen of Coffee shall we say, then let me ask you what coffee powder do you use? I can tell that makes a big difference. Some friends have told me Chock full of nuts is good and some use the Sams brand or Costco brand etc. I think a lot depends on the coffee powder so share that with us. |

| | AC, Ha ha, uncrowned queen indeed!!. More like necessity is the mother of invention. Well my recipe for the filter coffee is as follows. Although not exactly the taste as back home, it comes in a close second. 1 cup of Columbian Supremo roasted whole bean coffee.( Any brand is fine. I just buy the one on sale from my local grocer.the taste comes out the same whether it is starbucks, or peets, or folgers or any local brand) 1 cup of French Roast Whole bean roasted coffee seeds.( again any brand will work) 1 cup of French market Brand Coffee plus chicory( here is a link to their website: https://frenchmarketcoffee.intellipo...h-chicory.aspx I grind this combo once in 4 days fresh and make filter coffee. I don't buy in bulk from Sams or Costco , as i find that the coffee flavor goes off , since the quantity is too much( for the two of us). Give it a try and let me know. This combo works well with the cofffee maker too , if you don't have a filter or one of those percolator thingies!! |

| | AC, Yes lets start a coffee drinkers forum. Then we can discuss all the different coffees!! I grind everything in my trusty old Sumeet. The french market coffee , i forgot to mention is already in the roasted and powdered form ( but i powder it some more to make it finer). Hope this helps. |

| | I'm a coffee lover too!!! Can't do without my morning cuppa along with the newspaper (hard copy in India & soft copy here!!). I'm very particular abt filter coffee & the coffee powder. I bought the filter from India & glad that i get Bru Green Label here, though very expensive. Ahhh!!! nothing to beat the aroma of filter coffee first thing in the morning with lots of froth.........so refreshing!!!! |

| | AC, You are going to feel jealous of me, now !The best coffee in Chennai so far has been Leo's (ground to your favourite proportion) & that too, only from the Mylapore branch on Mada veedi. But now a stiff competitor is Kumbakonam Degree Coffee which is so popular in Chennai now. K D C powder is freshly ground and delivered at home on phone order. I buy in 1/4 kg packs so that I can open one by one, without losing out on the aroma. V prefers a mug, but for me, nothing to beat my davara-tumbler(fairly big ones given when I got married). It will hold 250 ml minimum - so what ! The first coffee is your best energiser for the whole day ! Oh, you must live in Chennai to drink your coffee in the morning, browsing through The Hindu - there is no parallel for a fresh start in the morning ! ![]() Love, Chithra. |

| | Dear, Dear AC, I never knew, there were so many coffee lovers here... When we were kids, we used to get the best coffe powder from Leo Coffee... and the milk fresho fresh.. Fresh Karandha paal...So, my mom used to give fresh coffee... The day starts off with coffee... But gone are those days, where we used to enjoy that... I cannot start the day off, without a cup of coffee.. Due to my profession, now I have to have coffee or tea once in every 2 hours... Here, in Muscat, till Shan was here, had the luxury of having great coffee early in the morning... Somehow, I cant have the coffee prepared by myself, though Shan & my friends feel it is nice... So, now after they left to Chennai... I get up, have my bath & dress up and go straight to the petrol station and whether I fill the gas for my vehicle or not, I have to fill my petrol, Coffe from the adjuscent Select Shopping... There were days, when there is no coffee in the regular Petrol station, I have to travel another 5/6 kms extra for this coffee... But ofcourse, I have to be contended with the coffee from the Nestle vending machine.... Dear V24, Morru morru bajji & chutney.... or Morru morru vengaya vadi and chutney... really drooling for that... Pls count me in.... |

| | Dear Veda Your posts perk the readers as much as coffee does. Thanks for jump starting my day. In desperation I too have gone to gas stations. But guess what we are under the Starbucks BOOM that there is Starbucks Coffee everywhich way u turn. Personally I dont like their coffee as its either too strong or too thick or just not my taste. But always can do with a cappucino. maybe their prices are the deterrent V24 doesnt realise there are many us lining to reach her place for the morru morru items .... |

| | Hello Wonderful ladies one more coffee lover in your group. Oops sorry Veda!!! Chithra there is no coffee anywhere in the world like the one in India I always miss the B'lore filtre coffee. AnandChitra. Wonderful topic. Hey me too before use to have only milk with boost, or bourvita or horlicks, Never use to have tea or coffee before marriage. Tea ruled out as it is allergic can't have it. Started having coffee after marriage and today without a cup of this hot brew na can't start the day. During my stay in Australia I had visited a coffee plantation. Wow it was so wonderful. Tasted nearly 30 types of coffee with different flavours. As went on tasting them in the end all coffee's tasted the same hahahahaha almost in the end was not able to make out the taste of the coffee. But I really enjoyed that they had coffee cakes, chocolates, biscuits, all in coffee flavour. It was wonderful. |

| | Invigorating( literally ) blog...! Growing up, though it was boost or complan for me to kick start the day, I was surrounded by coffee lovers all around. My dad, grandpa, mom could have a second dose, third and a fourth too...And the 3rd dicoction for the servant was the norm in our house too and our maid, who was almost family for us - used to sit down and demand mom/grandmom her suddu thanni( her nickname for the coffee served to her ). But all of a sudden, when I started off on my own, I started longing for the morning coffee. The longing just grew and now I cannot start off my day without the morning coffee. Mine is Folgers brewed in Gevalia coffee maker. I have a filter but don't bother to put it to use unless my MIL or mom are here. Wow, Vandhana, so much patience to grind fresh. Feel like visiting you early in the morning |
