Where's my Tailor?

One of the unforgettable things about Deepavali was the innumerous times my mother and I would walk to the Tailor shop. His standard reply was "not finished yet". Sometimes when we passed his shop on our way, this exchange would take place without words, with only hand signals. Always "not finished yet". Even if we give ahead of time its still the same reply. If we probe further he would come up with the "falls not ready" or need to hem or need to finish the buttons or hook or sides not ready. And the rare instance when he would say someone didnt come in to help because they were sick . Mostly its just to do the sides or need to finish the hem line or hooks. This always created a lot of anxiety for me because I wanted to get the new item ready and so I could be set to wear it all Deepavali. For many years I only wore "Davanee" chattai and pavadai. Not sure if anyone wears these days. Only graduated to saree after wedding which really was not much because my inlaws were liberal and I could wear salwars too. But I wore the davanee and pavadai for many years mostly thru high school and college. I still consider it my favorite as it is easy to wear and its purpose, to cover, is served well. Always fun to buy nice pattu pavadai and matching blouse and then buy chiffon or georgette or some many variety of material for the davanee. Depends on the occassion. For school it was always cotton. Nowadays my husband who travels frequently to Chennai says there are so many Tailor shops and some even stitch and give while you wait or shop for 1 hour or so. I just could not beileve it. Gone where the days when all of us used to take turns to goto the tailor shop and inquire .My brother used to hate going and would get angry but it used to be on the way to other shops. So maybe the tailors are all so much better and so much more sophisticat- ed that none of you have this situation anymore or do you?

Dear Anandchitra,
That was a good blog. You brought memory of childhood days. It's so true that these tailors made us long for our Deepavali dresses. I remember he will finish off with my long skirt(paavadai) and he always make us walk for the blouses. I don't what hatred he had for ladies blouses (inspite of being a ladies tailor!).
I don't think these tailors have really changes even these days...for the other day when I called my co-sister to wish her for Deepavali she says she did not wear her new saree because of the blouse pending work with the tailor. Poor gal and eek tailor!
Bring more such memories through your blog...

Dear Kanmani
I liked reading yur reply too. I had a friend in college by your name. I cannot believe that they are still the same !!!!!!! When will these tailors learn?? and youre right about the blouses. That took the longest time make us walk and walk And I used to ask everybody going from home that side pl. check for me so everyone would get even more annoyed with me. Those days it was a big thing to wear all matching matching and love the pavadai chattai.Posted 16th November 2007 at 06:36 AM by Anandchitra
