Mysore: The city of palaces

At 8.00 in the morning after a breakfast of ‘kozhakatta’ and chutney we set forth for Mysore. Since it is only a few hours of drive from here we had decided to drive down. The NICE road which was constructed & opened for public recently was such a good one that my DH wasn’t able to decelerate from 100KMPH. Around 10.30AM we reached Mysore and went directly to the famous Chamundi Hills & the Bull(Nandi) which is just 2-3KMs from Chamundi temple . We bought laddoo prasadam, clicked some pics and started to my office were our accommodation was booked. I didn’t have any idea about the roads to be taken so we enquired at every junction and our pathfinders were the auto wallas. They were really helpful, may be that is the time I liked them the most ;) After checking in and having a late lunch of pizza and coke we went to see the KRS dam and Brindavan gardens . Entry fee is 25Rs per head and 50 if you have a camera. Don’t smuggle camera inside without a ticket because they have guards inside checking for your tickets for cam. It was around 5.45PM when we reached Brindavan, so was not able to climb up the dam. When I came here as a child Brindavan had attracted me a lot, it was the first time I was seeing such a beautiful and big garden. But now it has lost its charm for me. Being diwali holidays it was crowded with college students and family.
Next day morning after a grant breakfast we set forth for seeing the beautiful Mysore palace . I don’t know how many times I have visited the place but still I love going there. It is such a beauty. Mysore palace, three floored, was built by the Wodeyar IV of the Mysore dynasty. The marriage hall, public durbar hall and private durbar, courtyard, gorgeous chandeliers….. Every time I leave the place I leave as if I am leaving something behind. They charge 20Rs per head and camera is not allowed inside, by paying 5Rs you will get a locker where you can safely deposit yours and obtain it once you finish the internal tour. Our next stop was at the Jag Mohan Palace which is now converted to an art gallery. The palace has paintings of Wodeyar III , IV and various other members of the royal family. The first floor exhibits paintings of Rajaravi varma and some other mural works. The mural art room also has the musical instruments used by the royal family. The art gallery is worth paying 25Rs per head, they don’t allow camera and mobile phones inside the gallery. Since we had just few more hours with us we decided to visit St.Philomena’s later.
Srirangapatna is about 14Kms away from Mysore. It was the capital of Mysore state during the reign of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan. The famous Ranganatha Swami temple is located in Srirangapatna. The place where Tipu Sultan died is marked by a memorial and is near to the temple. The other monuments of the place are Gumbaz which contain the tombs of Hyder Ali, Tipu sultan and his mother, sisters, wives, sons etc. Just a kilometer from Gumbaz is the famous and holy Sangam . A parking fee of 20Rs. is to be paid at Sangam and the temple. Tipu’s summer palace and Nimishamba temple is also on the same road.
Our next stop was Rangathittu Bird sanctuary , it was a bit difficult for us to find the way since everyone we asked gave their own ways to reach the sanctuary!! We have to take a by lane from the NH and the by lane comes on left side before Srirangapatna when coming from Mysore. The place is so cool and silent with just the chirpings of birds. The birds are still to come since the migration is yet to start. It was about 20Rs per head and 30 for the car that is charged as entrance fee. Sumathi canteen is present inside the sanctuary to satiate you. Don’t miss the boat ride which is open till 6.00PM, because that is the opportunity to see birds from a closer distance. It is such a good place for relaxation. And something which is to be mentioned is they keep the surroundings and toilet really neat and clean. By 6.30 we started back to Bangalore with the hope of coming back sometime in winter to chill out.

That was a good narration. It helped me to brush up my memory, which i had visited years back. The links given are also helpful for those who want to delve deep into the history.:)Posted 22nd October 2009 at 05:44 AM by manchitra

I am glad you have noted all these things... place to see and how much they cost etc etc. When I come to B'lore, I am sure you will take me for a trip , won't you??
Been ages when I last visited these places and unfortunately I do not remember much of it, except for Chamundi Hills. Sometimes I wonder why we visit places when we are young, as we seem to forget those places easily ( atleast in my case ). Would like to go now, when I am in a better position to appreciate and remember... Glad you had the opportunity.Posted 22nd October 2009 at 06:59 AM by knot2share
