On 25th Oct, Sunday my husband and I had enrolled for a "Parenting the newborn" at 1:00 PM. So, after having lunch, we left for the class, which was at the hospital.
I was feeling so very sleepy that day and kept telling my husband. I also mentioned to him once that if I get pains on that day, It would be so easy to get admitted since I would be at the hospital attending the class. My husband kept on telling no way you wont get pains today.
So, the class started and LO was kicking away on my bladder and I badly wanted to pee. At 2:00pm, we had a break.
I got up to go to the restroom and felt a gush of warm liquid. I felt my pants getting wet and was so embarassed that I had peed my pants. But wanted to be very sure so went to check. And I was positive that my water had broken and it wasnt urine.
I told my DH and he was so happy

.. I told our instructor and she immediately arranged for a wheelchair to take me to the labor and maternity unit.
Once there, it took a while for them to confim if it was amniotic fluid. By 3:30, they confirmed it and shifted me to the labor room. They talked to me about inducing labor since I dint have any pain. Also, I had to deliver within 18 hrs after my water broke otherwise, there would be risk of infection.
I asked them if I could wait for a couple of hours before they could induce. So we decided waiting till 6:00PM.
Dh went home to get my labor bag and mom. Meanwhile, I was relaxing, had a bath and ate Pizza

. They said it would be my last meal before I delivered so I could eat anything.
Time was ticking and by 6, I still dint have pains. So they inserted the IV and started a low dose of pitocin, which would be increased every 30min. During the last week, I had slightly elevated BP. So, I was under constant monitoring. BP did go high at times, but came back to normal. It kept fluctuating.
By 8:00pm I started feeling mild menstrual like pains. The graph showed that I was contracting. I was chatting away happily with mom and DH and walked around a bit along with my IV stand. LO was doing great inside

.
By 10:00pm, the pains got stronger. I knew when it came. Started off at lower back and radiated to lower abdomen and legs. The breathing I learnt at the childbirth classes helped me get through the contractions. The anaesthesiologist came and spoke to me about the epidural and I said I would like to try to go without getting an epidural. He said, If I needed it anytime, I could just ask for it, but earlier the better, since during the last minute, it would be difficult for me to sit still.
At 11:00 , the doctor checked my cervix and I was 4cm dilated but completely effaced. By now the pains were so strong i was yelling. Dh and mom kept asking me if i needed the epidural and I kept denying. After one particularly painful contraction, I puked. Then, I kept drinking water and sucking on orange candy. It really made me feel a lot better. I also took multiple trips to the restroom between contractions.
At about 12:30, the pain was really unbearable and I asked for the epidural. The doctor checked my cervix and I was already 9.5cm dilated. DH kept comforting me and remind me it was almost over and we would see our LO soon. He and the doctor and the nurse tried to convince me that I was already almost completely dilated and If i really wanted an epidural now. But i was not able to bear the pain so asked for it. The anaesthesiologist came at 12 45 and made me sit at the corner of the bed. I was supposed to sit still and it was so difficult to sit still during a contraction. The nurse and dh were so supportive and after 15-20 mins, the epidural was in and I was feeling less pains. In a few minutes, I dint feel any pain at all. Just knew I was contracting by feeling my tummy get tight.
Now, i was completely dilated and ready to push by 1:20 am. But the doctor suggestd that I rest for sometime and meanwhile LO's head can descend lower. He was at +2. So, i went to deep sleep. At 2:30, the doctor came in and I was ready to push. They emptied my bladder and told me how I should push.
So started pushing with all of them encouraging me. Once, I yelled at mom and DH for not being quick enough to hold my legs

..
At 3:45, i was so exhausted of pushing. They could see LO's head. The doctor told me about using a vacuum extraction. I tried for a few more contractions and then accepted to go for vacuum extraction. Once the vacuum was attached on LO's head, I pushed really very hard and wanted to see LO. That push was a wonderful feeling. I could feel it when the head came out. Then, another push, and LO was out at 4:03 am. In a few seconds, he started crying. I was so releived and happy. Dh was in tears and he cut the cord. They held LO on my chest for a few seconds and took him for observation because of the vacuum extraction. Meanwhile, i was getting my perineum stitched and placenta delivered. I had a second degree tear and a hemerrhoid.
He got and apgar of 9 or something i dont remember. I was in the labor room for recovery till 6:00 am and then shifted to mother baby ward. LO came to me at 6:15 am and I was so delighted to see him. His eyes were open and I immediately tried to feed him. It was not a great success because I had flat nippled and LO was too sleepy. They said he would be like that for the first 12-24 hrs.
But, the next day, he got jaundice and was under the lights for 2 days.
Now, we are back home and doing great :).
