Default Bhagoriya & Hareli

Bhagoriya is an auspicious festival which is observed a week before the festival of colors. Bhagoriya was primarily a festival of the Bhils. It was the principal festival of the Jhabua district.
Bhagoriya allows one to officially elope with his or her lover. The devotees worship the God of Dance, Bahgoradev during this festival.

Hareli is a festival held in the month of monsoon in the state of Chhatisgarh. During this festival, people pray to God for a bountiful yield of crops. Local farmers worship the cows and farming equipments, during Hareli. They also hang garlands of neem leaves from their doors to ward off infections and diseases.

Hey Ragini...

This comes across as a real surprise!!

And did you know... the literal meaning of the term Bhagoriya is elopers.??

The most striking characteristic of this festival is that here one is officially given the permission to elope with one’s lover.

And you know how all this happens?? Its real interesting...

The boy has to apply gulal on the girl his has liked and if she reciprocates he is at complete liberty to elope with her. He can also offer her a betel leaf as an expression of his love. If she accepts the token, he can rest assure that she has agreed to his proposal and is equally keen on spending the rest of her life with him. The marriage will be eventually solemnized.

The fun is indeed unlimited. Everybody dances to the beat of the drums and the thalis. There is joyousness in the atmosphere and notes of Shahnai and Bansuri fill the air.
You will also start tapping your foot and crave to be a part and parcel of this merriment.

Is there anybody else who knows of this festival??
Do share your experiences...

Hello Mallika...

Finally somebody has replied....

I was wondering, how nobody felt curious about such an unusual tradition being followed in a country like ours.!!

But am glad you replied...

Now,...isnt it intriguing that there are people who still follow this tradition, and actually follow it seriously!!

Wow!! You really said it... Why cant we celebrate something like that.??
I wish it seaps in to the metro culture someday...
Iam so jealous of them...
