Hi,

I just took a look at 2 kindercare branches today in CA. I did not like the following issues about kindercare:
1) Parents are not allowed to send food for their child. The child has to eat only the food that they provide.
2) Parents cannot come to the daycare to feed their child.
3) The menu in one branch was good but it was not so great in the other branch.
3) There are 24 kids in a room. I think that is too much of an overload. During winter the kids will incessantly keep giving each other infections !! I have put my son in a daycare before and I know how bad winters can get with young kids.
4) Kids have to wear shoes at all times. They even sleep wearing their shoes. I feel this is unhygienic especially during rainy days.

Thanks,
Kavya.

Hi kavya..I am just analysing your points..not supporting any one.

1.Not only in kindercare..in many day care its like that..I do not find anything wrong..to maintain uniformity this rule may be set....

2. Other children may miss their moms if they find other mom feeding her child..which is not fair..Its a place where children from various sectors come..so handling food of every nationality will be cumbsersome...

I think we cannot expect to be like our schools in India..This is just my opinion.

You can point out other points to the co-ordinator who may oblige or make changes to suit your child's needs..I think Montessori schools accept food from home..though not feeding by moms..may be you can enquire with such schools

Hope you can find a day care to suit your child's needs..Good luck.

Montessori schools do accept food from home.My son was in Montessori for his Pre-K,but he was a picky eater and for him to look at other kids and to learn good eating habits,I never used to send food from home.

Usually most daycares do not accept food from home or mothers feeding kids and I think that is in the best interests of the kid.

Hi Kavya,
I'am also looking for daycares for my son,he will be starting when he is 1-1/2 and this is what I understand.
1.Most centre based daycares don't let parents send food, the reason is small kids want the same thing the other person is eating, either your kid may feel left out or other kids may think he is receiving special treatment.
2.Again other kids will feel left out so I think this is perfectly fair.
3.I was not very impressed with the snacks menu, but I saw only one menu and it looks like it keeps changing every week.
4.24 does sound a lot,the daycare I'am interested takes about 15,16 kids per toddler room and there is 5:1 student to teacher ratio. But they did tell me the rooms get bigger and no of kids increase as they go up in age.About the infections I guess we have to deal with it when we decide to put our kids in a group care just my personal opinion.I have not had my son in a group care setup so far but as he is growing he needs to socialize thats the main reason I'am looking for daycare.
5.I totally agree with this one,I'am kind of planning to ask if he can have 2 shoes an indoor and outdoor one.
All the Best in finding a daycare you like.

Hi Newmommy,

I know that a lot of daycares do not allow their moms to feed the children. I used to send my son to the Bright Horizons daycare in Cisco campus. It was an excellent daycare. They allow the parents to visit the child anytime. We can also send home cooked food and feed the child in the daycare. Plus they had a webcam in each room. So we could watch our child anytime from our desk. The children do not wear shoes inside their rooms. Teachers used to wear disposable gloves while changing diapers and wiping children's noses. After taking a look at Kindercare both me and my husband felt that Bright horizons daycare in Cisco campus is far more professional.

The other negative I noticed with Kindercare daycare is that the lunch period is only 1/2 hour. I think that is too short. It should at least be 45 min-1 hour. The young kids are just learning to feed themselves and I feel they should give them more time. I guess different parents have different needs.

Thanks,
Kavya.

Kavya,I think the one you have mentioned must be the 'only' one like that...As far as I know,I have never come across daycares allowing mothers to feed and almost all have meal times fixed at 1/2 hr.

Hi Kavya,
I totally agree with you on the space issue. Its really a very small place for 24 kids.I don't know how kids will sleep in such a small place.Thats one of the reasons I decided against Kindercare.
Even I had similar thinking when they told that kids will be sleeping with shoes on.I don't know why they follow such systems..

But don't compare in-campus daycare and normal day care centre. We have daycare in our campus but the wait time is more than a year. But the cost is also quite high.

I have seen the space issue in most of daycares in BayArea.Maybe its just a problem in BayArea I think.

Thanks
Mangai

Hi Mangaii,

I visited quite a few other daycares and they told me that it is required by law to have the shoes on for 2 year old kids. In case of a earthquake or fire emergency kids need to run out right away. Probably it is not a requirement for infants. My son was in the infant/toddler section in Cisco daycare.
I agree with the cost and the wait time about on campus daycares. But I feel its well worth it. When I sent my son to Cisco daycare I felt so secure because there was no possibility of abuse at all. I had to pull him out only because he was sick all winter.

Sunitha,

I have seen about 10-15 daycares in CA and not all have a lunch period of 1/2 hr. Most have a lunch period of 45 min.

Thanks,
Kavya.
