I may be late in posting a reply to this thread as i joined IL only recently. But its a good suggestion from my sis-in-law who too has an automatic door. She always wears one key of the door in her chain. That way you will not forget to take the keys whenever you step out. Well, this holds good only for people who wear chains always:)

the same happened to me once, when we went to india for a vacation, i was in my dh house and my then 2 year old son locked me up inside the bathroom, except for my dh aunt nobody else was in the house and i was screaming on top of my lungs to get help but nobody heard me, my son also went to another room to play, i was feeling so suffocated in the tiny bathroom, later the maid who came to clean the house, heard me and opened the door....
later when I told this to everyone we had a hearty laugh!!!!!
