Hi,

You can start our food items like rice, dhal, rasams and veggies now. Idlis & Pongal (with rasam & ghee) are very good to introduce now.

Infact, I second your inlaws in this. I started rice when my children were around 4 to 5 months. Infact, I began feeding them pongal (mildly done) and rice with moongdhal, rasam & ghee. As for hand blender..no idea...since I used to blend everything with the pressure cooked veggies (like potato, carrots, peas, beans etc) in regular blender.

All the best !

Cheers
Krithika

Braun and dura- brand immersion blender are good.Easy to clean.

No harm in trying.

Like Krithika has said you can start rice/dal/veggies right now. Are you giving any other solids already? If not then its easiest to start with rice cereal (either home-made or bought) or fruit puree and then shift to normal cooked rice after a month or two. I use an ordinary blender so no idea abt hand-helds.

Vanathi.

PS - Sweets are an individual preference but its best to keep off refined sugar as much as possible.

Hi,

I soak rice for an hour and so and let it dry in the sun and grind it coarsely. It is very easy and fast to cook for kids. Just boil water and 2-3 spoons of this powder and your rice is ready in a jiffy!!! Ofcourse, you cannot mash veggies this way. I find it convenient when i give only either rasam or curd rice. Else i too pressure cook veggies with more water and blend in the regular preethi mixi.

Hope this helps,
vani

Hi sailaja,
This is the one I used for preparing purees
Magic Bullet Express : Target

Look for sales and usually around sale period they will be just 1/2 the price. Its very useful. If there is some extra you can store using the top.

Thanks

Dear Friends,
Now, don't wonder what this elderly woman is doing here, poking her nose into young mothers' threads.
I write this purely as an experienced grandmother.
Pressurecook, a tsp of rice, 1/2 tsp moong dhal (to start with), tiny pieces of 3,4 vegs (keep on changing them), 2,3 leaves of any greens, half tomato with enough water. Cool & mash very well with a ladle or potato masher. Add salt (optional), a tiny knob of butter.Feed with a spoon, as semi solid. The child will learn to "eat" even if there are tiny grains. Otherwise the child learns only to "swallow" mashed food. Later, the baby starts vomitting if the food is not mashed completely because he or she cannot eat grainy food.It gets stuck in the throat. I used to feed nicely mashed (not mixi, but laddle) ven pongal, rava or semiya upma idlis etc more to introduce a variety in taste. The same blender mashed food has a monotonous taste for the baby & he spits it out.
The above, I learnt only by experience.
My two cents! My 2cents
Love,
Chithra.

Love,
Chithra.
You are more than welcome to post here, Chitra ji. We need all the help we can get. I agree with you on the baby getting used to the mashed food part. Even though I used blenders initially, now I mash the food with the back of a spoon so Riya gets used to the texture of the food, but she is 8 months now. I personally think it is easier for a beginner to eat and enjoy if the food is blended well and has a soupy texture.
