Riya is passing hard pellet like stools and cries while passing them. We gave her some prune juice which helped last night, but today she refuses to take juice and makes faces as if she doesn't like it (well, I don't blame her, I am not a big fan either).
What else can I do? I have a feeling that an iron rich diet in the last two-three days is the culprit.
Thanks!
Raj

Hi Raj..
1.There are various baby body massages to relieve constipation(in abdomon area)..Pls google and try that
2.Apply vaseline or oil in her anus
3.Try to include cheerios, spinach, ghee in her diet
Do not worry..Its just a passing phase..

Hi Riya,
Please soak some resins in warm water for sometime (30-40mins) and try giving her a few tsps of that water.
I used to do that (On the advice of my mom) when my kids were very young. This happens occassionally even when we give a diet rich in fiber and with lots of water too !
Take care !
Cheers
Krithika

One more thing Ria, you can also try applying castor oil on her bottom (where she passes stools) . This is again a home remedy.

Thanks, Krithika. I'll soak some raisins now. Supriya, I applied vaseline and I'll google for the massage. Thanks!

Raj,
You can also try giving Riya a warm bath, let her sit up in warm water with lower part of tummy immersed in water .Also try giving her 1 or 2 oz of lukewarm water, she will go within minutes if this works. You can try pears if she does not like prunes.

Hi Raj,
I would strongly urge you to find the cause for constipation and remove/reduce the corresponding food from her diet. Some of the ways to avoid constipation
1)Increase water consumption
2)Probiotics in diet
3)P fruits like Peach, Pears and Prunes
4)Adding yogurt to diet.
A diet that lack enough fibre causes constipation. Do you mind sharing the solids that were given during last 3 days ?
Thanks
Mangai

Mangaii, on Thursday and Friday we took a road trip to Nashville and since we were on the road most of the time, I fed Riya oatmeal cereal+banana and avocado a lot, and I have a feeling it's due to the high iron content in both the cereal and the banana that's making her constipated. I didn't realize at that time, but now I know better.
I am planning on giving her some khichdi with yoghurt and ghee tonight (she eats only one meal in a day, rest of the time I nurse her). Also, called her pedi just now and she said to give her 2 ozs. of prune juice every day until her bowel movements are back to normal.
