My understanding is that yoghurt in most cases is pasteurised and all the good and bad microbes are killed. Live culture yoghurt is pasteurised yoghurt with the good guys added back into it. Curd of course is what we set at home and has lactobacillus (not sure which other). By populating the gut with good bacteria you can actually improve bowel habits. If live culture yoghurt is not available, a probiotic yoghurt or just plain probiotics is good. You may get those at a health food store. I will wait for others to chime in with popular brands.
