Exactly what I do, too.

Thumbs down Re: Diet for Babies Under 1 year

Hi Vandhana,

This is meena writing to you. i have a 7 months old son , although babies would not like all that the doctor suggests, we may have to try out everything little by little to see if they really like it. at one stage they would settle down to a proper diet that they like.
here it goes: -

you can giving Ragi poridge - can start from completion of 4 months -

soak ragi - just 2 handful - overnight - grind in mixie until it crushes well, filter the milk alone- use properly boiled water to mix with the crushed ragi ( water to boil for 15 min) , once you get the milk , heat it in small flame in stove , add four pinches of sugar for taste, once the poridge thickenens add little milk as per taste and take it out. this is too good and your baby would love it.you can give this as long as you want - even after your son goes to school.

Orange Juice - you can give him mosambi ( green onces not yellow onces) - add little water and sugar to the juice and give him - this has lot of Vit C - do not give him thick juice as he may find it difficult to digest.

Apple Shake : Boil apple in cooker - remove the skin - take out seeds- only take the pulp from apple - mixer it - add little milk and sugar ( aavin / lactogen milk ) . keep water beside and give him enough to digest properly

Sapota Juice / Banana - take only the pulp - mixer it and add little water and feed them - same meathod for banana ( mala vazhai - mountain bananas only )and sapota. Do not give , Papaya, Mangoes , and Jack fruit until summer is fully gone.

Vegetable soup : you can boil carrot and potato - mash it - add little salt and give him

hope the above would be useful

The browning happens cannot help it....Have you tried apples instead.. they freeze well and organic apple puree is always readily available in the grocery store ( you do not have to buy from the baby section, even the regular organic additive free mixes will do).
I also buy some organic fruit in syrup from the grocery store ( peaches and pineapple ) and they store well to. Last week I also bought dried prunes and purreed that with his apples . He loved the taste but had a lot of BM :)
I tried with apple, mangoes but she only liked banana. I did try gerber organic banana puree but it doesn't even taste/smell like banana. I don't get it.

Does any one has idea where I can get whitabix from? I heard that meijer has it but not sure in which section/department...

Thanks
Meeta

Meena ,
Thanks for the recipies BTW do the Drs in India suggest that we give cow's milk and sugar to kids under 1 ? The Doctors here say its a big no-no. I would like to give Raagi to my kid but so far he does not like the taste plain since I do not add any milk or sugar. Is there anything else I could substitute and add to the raagi ? My kid is 10 months. They do say yoghurt for kids under 1.

Meeta - sure you can. Add to boiling water and cook until its porridge-like. A little milk/sugar will improve the taste.

Dallascw - Only my personal opinion - I think a little cow's milk/sugar will not do any harm. The main concern in the US as far as I understand is that they are afraid that by OKing cows milk parents will start to substitute that for formula (which would not be a good idea). Similiarly refined sugar isnt good for teeth or health but a spoonful once/twice a day cant do much harm as long as the child doesnt get used to having everything sweetened. If you dont want to use milk/sugar you can add formula/EBM or fruit puree I guess. Did he do alright with the curd?

Vanathi.

I like the option of using fruit puree instead of milk, Vanathi.

I have been reading the wholesome foods website and most of the foods that I wanted to read about like egg yolks, blueberries, chicken and turkey (I wanted to check on when I can add these to Riya's diet) are said to be introduced at 8 months of age. Is that a magic number or is it an approximate age? Do I NEED to wait until Riya is 8 months or can I introduce these one at a time and see how it goes?
