dear banu

i made ragi kanji for my daughter and it is very healthy......u can buy 1 kg of ragi and wash it well and pour water till it immerses very well......leave it for a day without disturbing....then filter the water and tie the ragi ina towel and keep it inside and wait for a day and it wud sprout well.....take this is a big plate or a thambalam and sun dry it for a day ..........meanwhile take in 250gms of wheat(full godumai),a handful of badam, cashews and 100gms sago......also wash the godumai well n sun dry it.....then take a big pan or ilupachetti and dry roast all the grains and give it to the mill for powdering...tell them tht u have to giv ur baby and aks him to take care when he puts in the machine......hope this solves ur kanji preparation...this is a laborious work but worth it.....

Hi banusree,

Here is my version of 'kanji' we used to prepare like this for kids. only rice kanji.
Take one tumbler of rice, 2 sp barle, 1 sp cumin seeds.
Just heat a pan, fry all the ingredients for just 2 min.
கைபொறுக்கும் சூடு போறும். மிஷின் கூட வேண்டாம் மிக்ஸியே போறும்.

Make kanji with this. If it is less than 6 months, after putting kanji, keep it for some time as it is and remove the water from the top of kanji and mix with milk and sugar and give it to the baby by pouring it in a feeding bottle.
You can eat the thick kanji. no problem. It will taste great.

Or if thebaby is more than 6 months you can prepare thekanji some what thick and then add milk and sugar. Mix with the kanji and feed by spoon.
I this habit will help you when you change kanji to sadam.
And you are using rice only so no need to afarid.

சில பேருக்கு கேழ்வரகு சூடு பண்ணும்.

Give a try and give me a feed back.

Hi Banu,

I give 2 types of kanji for my daughter

1.One is with Pulingarisi,Wheat,Ragi, Pottukadalai and Payatham paruppu.
2.Other one is with pulingarisi,Pottukadalai and saabhudhana.

Take equal quantities of all of those(say 1 cup)

Fry everything separately on a pan without oil and powder them separately and mix all of them at the end.You can use a mixie for powdering .

Then while at the time of feeding you can boil them in milk in the stove and feed.

Hi! Ladies,

My daughter is 8 months old and I wanted to know about how to do the Ragi Kanji in USA. We dont get whole ragi here and since dont have flour mill so how to grind the ingredients after dry roasting?

Can I grind it in Mixie as I am not sure if it will grind real powder like.

Highly appreciate your replies. Also I wanted to know the amount/proportion of ingredients as in some replies it was given in Tamil which I cannot read.

Nirupama.
