Default lunch box ideas for indian kids in american schools

    Hello everyone,

I have been facing a problem when my kids come home without eating the food as the kids at school tease them when they get desi food. I tried packing semiya upma, rice noodles etc sometimes it worked n sometimes it doesnt.Im trying to fancy pack anything i make in ziplock covers, alu foils etc Since we have moved to the US very recently my kid finds it hard to adjust to the culture here.
I want to know from people here who have faced similar situation n please contribute some good recipes which is filling for an 8 year old kid as well as which looks presentable.

    thks

I would like to share my experience not sure if it will help.
When my son was in the small grades between kindergarten and 5 he loved eating dosai and chappati and noodles
so thats what I sent. there was only once when someone teased him and I brought it to the attention os the teacher. and then it was solved
I believe in retaining our true identity and thats how i have brought up my son. Even now he takes curd rice, pulao and noodles (ramen noodles) most days. Now that he is grown up he can handle things
But like I said i might not have helped
Maybe Sandwich with peanut butter, or jelly?? mac and cheese?

    Hi
i faced the same problem when we moved to canada last yr and then i started changing the names for eg for uthappam i told him to tell it is indian veg pizza it worked but as everything cannot be named i started making the same veg burgers and sandwiches and or chapathi wraps
for veg burgers boil potatoes andf other veg of ur choice and add binder like bread or cornflour and make patties and shallow fry in oil and place between buns
make some dry fry of veg and toast them in toaster for crispy sandwiches
i just make sure the veg r there in every lunch i pack for him and sometimes u take their lunches in indian style like macroni or pasta with our indian twist try it maybe it will work that is what i do
    hope this helped u

Try to tell your kid Indian food is as good as the american food ( I know it is difficult and the child would want the food like the others)

My Son had this trouble too .So I use to pack oothappams telling him its dosa pizza ,stuffed parattas as burritos and you can make pasta as upma and vegetarian burges filled with aloo karis and chutneys .

    Hi Sreemu,

Very interesting combos & lot of ideas. If we plan ahead & make such variety, kids will also eat with interest :)

    Just an FYI.

Had been there at costco yesterday where they were demoing "Ling Ling" brand veggie spring rolls. It tasted yummy, my DD liked it more than I. It doesn't have eggs, no transfat or MSG and have good calorific value. A box has 45 of them and sells for $9. Got one for us. With a bean sprout salad, it will make a good healthy lunchbox filler.

this really gave me a laugh because my mom used to do this terminology thing too to make me feel more comfortable eating indian food at school. i think later on it helps establish a real self-identity in the child. speaking from first hand i can say that i only regret that my parents didnt teach me more about my culture, not the other way around. makes me a bit of an ABCD.
