Smile Need high calorie indian recipes for underweight toddler.

    Hi Ladies,

I have a 15month old girl who is quite underweight. I need few indian recipes which are high in calories as well as healthy for her.

Also, have read a few other posts which talk about adding nut powders and dry milk powders. Can you suggest any milk powders found in the US market.

Also, is brown sugar a better option to use than regular sugar. Is there any healthier way of adding sweetness to her foods.

Can someone give me a sample diet plan for a day which can help me out in planning her meals.

    HI

Looks like we are in the same boat. My daughter will turn 15 months old in a few days and she weighs only 8.6 kgs.

These are the things I have started doing-
    1. One egg daily
    2. If I make khichri (Daliya/Rice), I make it in ghee.
    3. Potatoes and Bananas - I try and incorporate them in different ways
    4. Icecream shake - Add your LO's fave icecream to milk for additional calories
    5. Avocadoes are very healthy and calorie dense
    6. Peanut Butter and Olive oil are quite calorie dense too

My daughter doesnt like sweet food much (!!!!!) so I struggle a bit)

Strangely I stumbled across your post while looking for almond powder/paste. So, I will be following this post.

    All the best!!

How much does your daughter weigh? My 18 month old son weighs 9.5 kg. But he is very active and growing well. His Doc says some less weight is nothing serious. I do give him healthy food - fruits, veggies, cheese etc. But I dont overdo with the fat-laden stuff. Try to give her healthy balanced meal. If she is severely underweight, you should see her Doc.

    Hi!

My son is 2 yrs and 2 months, weighs about 9.8 kgs(22 pounds). He is active, goes to daycare so have been adviced by doctor not to worry.

She suggested rice/dal(Doctor is from India) and egg everyday.
i would suggest banana,Plantain(nethram - my son likes it a lot), avacado, chundals(that is made chick peas/ black eyed peas or brown channa).
I cut plantain into half with skin, rinse it in water, microwave for a minute. then peel off skin, slice it and add sugar/honey(optional) and some ghee. He likes it. If your kid prefers to eat the ripe plantain as such that is fine too. Plantain has protein content in addition to the carbs.
You can try toasted nuts, cheese sticks, tofu, soy chunks or paneer also - these are rich in proteins. I am not sure about the non-veg options as I am a vegetarian.

    Hope this helps.

Try giving her thing which she can bite on, may be she is teething again. My son went through phases like that when he was teething. Check if there was any change of food which caused constipation, does she have constipation now?

    Hi!Injetimdevi

Sorry to get back so late. How is your daughter now?

Some kids have loose stools while they teeth it is normal.

Try giving food which is crunchy rather than mashing up the food similar to what we eat but smaller bite sizes so that she doesn't choke. My son prefers them. We used to give what we eat regularly once he was about 11 -12 months. So try that.

    hope this helps.

    Hi!

the food you are giving her seems a really good one, cheese, curd, vegetables which is rich in proteins and fibre.

Hi, I came across this post while searching for non-veg recipes for my toddler. I can't help but comment on your note above. Are you saying you give your toddler Maggi 'Instant Noodles' for dinner? Everyday?

You are probably not aware of the health risks associated with instant noodles or you would never give it to your child. Everybody knows about the high sodium, trans fat and MSG levels in instant noodles but its a lot worse then that. From one source -

"Children in particular will suffer health problems if they consume instant noodles everyday. Noodles do not contain enough nutrients, while their additives are harmful to pregnant women and children under five.
As with other industrial fastfood products, instant noodles use many chemical ingredients, such as food colorings, preservatives and flavorings, that we should be wary of. Although they have minimal effects if consumed rarely, if consumed over a long time, the chemical substances will accumulate in one's body and later disturb the body's metabolism because essentially they are poisons.
There are some disadvantages to consuming instant noodles:
    1. They can reduce the ability of children under five to absorb nutrients. Arlene Ersenberg says in her book "What to eat when you are expecting", that many children under five have problems absorbing nutrients after consuming instant noodles.
    2. Noodles can negatively effect the development of a fetus. Ersenberg also says in her book that in England, many pregnant women who consume large amounts of instant noodles suffer miscarriages.
    3. Styrofoam, which is often used in instant noodles packaging, can cause cancer.
Therefore, it is better for you to avoid frequently consuming instant noodles, and if you want to consume them, you can add in vegetables to balance out the ill effects."

You can do a search on the internet and will come across many such articles.

I'm pregnant with my second one and seem to be craving Maggi, but I know if my toddler sees me having them he will want it. I have completely avoided buying them.

I am sorry if I misunderstood your post and ranted on about the ill effects of instant noodles! Hope your kid is feeling better and eating better now!
