Dear Ramya,
Knead the mavu very well with your hand. It is enough to steam for just 5 mts once the steam starts coming. Idli mould wil not make a difference.
Love,
Chithra.

Dear Priya,
I am not very sure. Just try thus:
Boil 1 cup of water + 1/2 cup jaggery.
When it boils, reserve little, to the rest add rice flour & cook till done. If necessary, add the reserve.
Make balls & steam.
Love,
Chithra.

Dear C

I have a doubt in the eggless carrot cake ( http://www.indusladies.com/forums/31062-post66.html ). Should the cashewnut be ground with water or is it powdered cashewnut? I know I sound very silly, but nevertheless wanted to clarify.

Dear Chitra madam,

Today, Pillaiyar chathurthi pooja went off well. I bought two ' vallam bazham' for neivadheyam. well, I got few queries
regarding that

1. first, what do they call in English?
2. why do we keep that for ' pillaiyar chathurthi'?
3. How do we know that it's ripe or not?
4. How should we eat it? I remember, my paati used to mix it with vellam & give! Is't the right way?
5. Do you have any recipe with it?
6. And if you know anything more about the fruit pls. share it with us!

Thank in advance

Regards,
Anu!!!

Dear Anu,
Vilampazam is called wood apple.
This is the season, it is available here & that is the primary reason for keeping for Pillayar - we keep all available fruits.
If it is ripe, it becomes very light. Heavy is not ripe.
Yes, we mix with vellam & eat it. Add some water & green chillies. Temper kaduku - it becomes a pachadi.
So far I have no recipe. But I will remember to post, if I come across one.
Love,
Chithra.

Chithra dear,
Can we make basandhi quickly with condensed milk -- can you give the proportions for it please ? And do post for us non Chennai vaasis the recipes for Capsicum inside raitha & milk vadai -- even the name itself is interesting .

And one puja related doubt -- back home usually we pray to a mud pillaiyar with a kodai [bought that morning from nearby pillaiyar koil] , then immerse it in some well / sea after 3 days ; that shopping experience itself, with the multitude of vigrahams & colourful umbrellas to select -- and fighting over siblings for who will carry the Lord home .........We used to keep the umbrellas also, stuck to the side of the biggest photo of Venkatachalapathy [near the ceiling] until the next Chaturthi , when it would be replaced ---- after coming here, all that remains is only a memory for lifetime

Can we pray to any Ganesha idol & not immerse it .... if so, then I can also use the idol at home for the pujai instead of just the photo/pictures ; just wanted to clarify !

Luv,
Dew.

Dear Manithuli,
I have never tried basundhi with C Milk - you will not get the "layers" which is the speciality of basundhi !
Yes, madam, milk vadai will be posted tomorrow ( please remember that I have promised to post 2 other recipes sp: for you this evening ! ).
Capsicum raitha, I forgot to take the photo that day. Anyway here it goes. When you chop casicum for sambar or anyother dish, do not discard the inner portion - seed et al. Chop them fine & saute in 1 tsp oil, covered till soft & cooked. Cool, add ground coconut+ green chillies & fresh curds.
Temper after adding salt.
Ever sice Manas got me the Maakal Pillayar, I nomore buy the mud pillayar. I use only that for the puja. So, according to me, there is no harm in worshipping an "already existing P', on chathurthi day !
Love,
Chithra.

Hi Mrs.C,

Now that we are all done with chathurthi, shd think abt the next festival which is navarathiri.

More than myself, my friends are curiously awaiting to eat yr sundal recipe. Do u have any different masala powder recipe (the powder we use for sundal) or any sundal recipe? Pls pls post it for us..

And, if there is any green tomato recipe, pls post it for me too. Have lots of the same and tried a couple of times the kootu & sambar recipes. So, it is time for a change!!

What container do u use for keeping oil? Tried the mustard sauce container which is available here and total waste. The oil is leaking thro its sides & also tried one from madras to pour over dosa, total waste again. Pls suggest me..

Thanks..
